I'm a complete ignoramus on this topic, but wouldn't the likes of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Dead or Alive fall under the 'beat em up' genre?

It's just that no-one's mentioned these at all, which surprised me a little.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

@gcunit The ones you mentioned are fighting games. Different genre.

@shaneoh Aside from the op, almost no one has even mention Turtles in Time aka one of the most popular 90s beat em ups!

"I'll take a potato chip... AND EAT IT!"
Light Yagami, Death Note
"Ah, the Breakfast Club soundtrack! I can't wait 'til I'm old enough to feel ways about stuff!"
Phillip J. Fry, Futurama

@MrMario02 For me honestly Turtles in Time wasn't that big for me. Now the first TMNT Arcade holds more for me since that was the one I found everywhere during that time period.

@ogo79 I loved the Rushing Beat series. I remember in Rival Turf there was a trick where you can edit the character's names and then of course in Brawl Brothers there was the code to get the Japanese version. How cool was that!!

i think the series is underrated. as soon as i started playing rival turf i was like oh yeah this is what i need.

I know it is old school and not as amazing as most of the games mentioned in this thread, but I still have a soft spot for Renegade on NES.

^Or at least the first one worth playin'! I recall encountering one that was supposedly older, maybe an atari-era game? I don't know, I didn't like it. Renegade was cool, at least considering its age. I wanna say there was a bit more attention to stage design, but I might be thinking of something else in that case (Double Dragon? I shouldn't have tried both in same hour. @_@).

@ogo79

Looked up online some history on Renegade and (as you mentioned) it was the grandfather of the genre basically. At least the arcade version of the game - I'm sure the NES version along with all the other ports came out later.

also from the makers of pier solar, a beat em up/brawler game called "project y" that has been in the works for the genesis/mega drive for over six thousand years and counting:

more screenshots are all in this thread i made awhile back.

Wow! It's great seeing all of this activity.

Double Dragon will always be what I consider the true emergence of the Beat 'Em Up, even if there were a couple of earlier prototypes like Kung-Fu Master and Renegade. The genre really came into focus with the advent of Double Dragon in 1987, and from there it exploded into the great Brawler Boom of the late 80s - early 90s. It's similar to how The Legend of Zelda technically wasn't the first fantasy action-adventure game on consoles, but it sure is the one that people recognize as being the most influential of those early archetypes.
