Topic: Why Do YOU Play Retro Games?

Retro games stand up to the test of time better than modern games today. Does anyone remember Uncharted 1 today? No. Does anyone remember Mother 2, on the other hand? Yes, because it was a revelation with its quirky dialogue, amazing music (Porky Means Business is the prime example of pushing the SNES's sound chip to its max potential with the music), awesome art style (note I didn't say graphics), and engaging gameplay. And yes, I'm comparing two games with different genres, but I'm just throwing out examples.

By the way, my favorite games are mostly from retro gaming (the exceptions are Brawl, Monster Hunter Tri, and Project Blackout). My list, from 10 to 1, is as follows:

  • Doom
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Star Fox 64
  • Project Blackout
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Pokémon Gold/Silver
  • Mother 2
  • Super Metroid (duh)

As you can see, only THREE modern games are on this list. Why? They mostly don't have what retro games do have: the ability to hold up against the test of time. Doom will be remembered more than Modern Warfare 3. Mother 2 and Final Fantasy IV/VI will be remembered more than Final Fantasy XIII. The modern games on this list may be thrown out in the next three years, but who knows?

Bottom line: retro gaming is ultimately more fun than most modern games.

I like retro games because programmers had to work within crazy limits!
It was always exciting to see what developers could get out of limited graphics chips and sound chips,
and how much they could fit into a game with limited memory.

These interesting times were gone when mass media storage got cheap and popular.
Though I think WiiWare with its 40MB limit captures these times a bit and it's amazing to see how much game can be crammed into 40MB, MotoHeroz being the best example (not only for content but also for gameplay, graphics and sound quality).

Cause they are better than modern...

Okay, I was trying to be funny, but after reading the above comment from SKTTR, my comment is somewhat true. It showed how creative developers. In addition, the games back then feel much imaginative due to a console limitations, especially graphics. Even some bad games back then have some appeal due to their creativity. Many of today's games, strive to be realistic and it comes down to many games start looking similar.

Alright here I go...
I was born in 1997 so I missed a HUGE chunk of gaming history. My craving started in 2009 when I was able to play Super Mario Bros. on the Wii virtual console, and I wanted to get a Gameboy Color. To this day I own more Gameboy systems than the DS 4/7 Gameboys 2/4 DSes (counting the 3DS 3/5). The Gameboy Color is my favorite Gameboy and probably my favorite handheld ever. I may even get a NES SNES and N64 from my uncle sometime soon. I love some older games more than newer ones and I love the Handheld Virtual console. So why do I play retro games because I missed out on them.

Same here.. and you gotta love the Classics..
