Uhuh, you're right. I'm also extremely tired of these excessive violent games which flood the market for almost a decade now (and no, I'm not talking about Mortal Kombat). Here's a quote from 2002 by former Nintendo CEO Hiroshi Yamauchi, which backs up what you were saying :
"Every game developer is shooting for nothing but realism and flashiness, so we’re seeing an overflow of games that look exactly the same. What does realism and flashiness have to do with fun?"
The man didn't play videogames himself, he knew what people wanted, and that makes you an excellent businessman in my opinion. And even though he made some 'wrong' decisions in the past, I must say that I really miss this man, mainly because of his pride and guts. To me he was Nintendo.
those people seem to forget not everyone wants to play first-person shooters. and it's a good thing hiroshi yamuchi said something like this back in 2002. and still today, for nintendo, the key factor and success of many of their franchises is down to the gameplay moreso than the graphics, visuals.
you can still have a flashy, realistic looking game, yet the gameplay and controls are crap.
Two reasons: nostalgia and because they're still great games that I often prefer over new games.
I love me some Double Dragon. I remember my siblings and I playing that in the dark of our grandparents basement when we came to visit. And Kung-Fu. And the original Mario. I love the fact that the Virtual Console(s) can bring back some of those feelings. Then there's the SNES, the greatest gaming system of all time (Megaman X and Donkey Kong Country, baby!) and my main source of gaming nostalgia until the PS1 came along. I also love my PSP for bringing back memories of PS1 games (Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, 2Xtreme, Tony Hawk, Ape Escape).
The charm of retro games in undeniable, for me. I never experienced them the first time around, so there's no nostalgia for me, but many are truly masterpieces. It seems that more love was put into games when they were smaller projects developed by smaller teams. Or maybe that's just me.
i play retro games because there so simple and fun. there so many awesome nes games like legend of zelda, castlevania, contra and so on. retro games just have that felling when you put in the cartridge and you hear the old music and see the 8 bit graphics and your just blown away.
i lounge around and play castlevania all day...maybe some zelda

I don't think today's market is necessarily overloaded with just First Person Shooter's; there are plenty of Third Person Shooters out there. I think the market does however have a majority of brutally violent realistic games with a sense of dread that after awhile of playing them make me actually want to go and play something a little less intense and certainly more colorful.
I notice my mood (and my wife does too) is actually a lot different when I play a Wii game made by Nintendo or my NES and SNES compared to my PS3. I am actually more relaxed and just having fun and don't care if I loose a life with retro games vs. being so tight and intense and get upset when I die on the PS3. Maybe that is telling me something, right? Like in the future just stick with Nintendo.
To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.

Yeah, I feel like I am about to transform teenwolf style into one of those cussing, testosterone pumping, teenage boys that spend their life spawn camping in CoD on Xbox Live.

Why do people read old literary classics? Because they're good.
I think modern games are becoming a lot like modern film - bloated with the same characters, tropes, and ideas of every other game around them. They have insane budgets for their games, millions thrown into marketing, and why? So it can get quick sales on release week (like the box-office) then be in the bargain bin in less than six months.
Not all modern games are like this. But I think it's traditionally retro games and Nintendo titles that really stand the test of time.

No doubt about modern games, with the very rare exception I never buy a game right away because in no time the game is discounted. The exception are Nintendo games of course which remain full price for awhile. As for the retro classics complete in box, they actually have and will maintain some value.

WaveBoy, you seem to have a great love and respect for retro games and yet you rag on retro/traditional controls at every possible opportunity (in pretty much every single one of your comments these days). How did you grow up loving video games, yet seemingly hating video game controls? How are you managing to play Mega Man 9?
Nostalgia and because they're fun! The simple pick up and play style is great and fits in with my current (lack of) free time and you can just jump straight into the games without hours of cutscenes. If there is one thing I find depressing with the current gen of big budget games is their apparent need to ape Hollywood. Seriously if I want a story I would much rather read a book or watch a film, they are much higher quality, if I'm gaming I want to play the bloody game!! Don't get me wrong some of my favorite games are this gen and the current tech means we can have amazing virtual worlds with stuff like Fallout or Skyrim etc.And while people may bemoan this generation (me included ), lets not forget that the current consoles have been flooded with Retro games and retro updates which has really invigorated the retro scene.I'm a big fan of the VC and XBLA and I can only hope that someday we will be able to legally play any game ever made, much like we can with music. Here's hoping. Anyhoo to surmise , I love all gaming but Retro style games will always be my favorite, they are, after all, what made me fall in love with gaming in the first place.
