Topic: Why Do YOU Play Retro Games?

I play retro games for a variety of reasons. First of all I was introduced to the world of video games when I visited my cousin back in 1984 and played Frogger on his Atari, but really I didnt get into them until my father rented a NES from a local video store. So for the most part its mainly nostalgia for me. Also maybe I am just odd but I find that alot of the game back in the day were just done up better. For some reason I find the storyline alot better in the older RPGs than todays RPGs.

Finally there are just fun and for some reason I can play them over and over no matter how many times I have beaten them. For some reason games today one play through is enough for me.

Guess the games' atmosphere (the combination of sounds, music and certain style of graphics)... A lot of the old games are rather 'short' and yet I played some of them a hundred times because they were so great...

With kind regards,

1. because they remind me of the good old days when gaming was a lot more fun and graphics weren't so much of a higher priority compared to the gameplay
2. before the sony, microsoft, nintendo wars we had sega vs nintendo, and the rivalry back then was very much about the gameplay and the characters. today sony, microsoft it's more about having better graphics.
3. because there were a lot more variety in games and there wasn't exactly one genre of a game dominating over the others, whereas today we have first-person shooters dominating.

Innovation and ingenuity has greater opportunities when faced with greater limitations. You can play a classic Nintendo game and see countless creative solutions to all kinds of gameplay problems and limitations of the hardware. Today, games hide behind their almost boundless power; then, they had to constantly invent new techniques and solve complex design puzzles to make things work.

I'd say the same about films: look at the lack of imagination in the Star Wars prequels' special effects. There's a whole lot going on, but very little vision behind all the computerized glitz. Compare it to the original films, when finding convincing ways to film miniature models required a great deal of thought and hard work.

My grass. Withdraw your feet from it.

Well put, agree with what you say here. Though some would argue that the limitations make the games worse I lean towards them making them better. Ninja Gaiden is a good example and if anyone knows anything about these classic games then "respawn" comes to their mind like a container of Ninpo dropping from a lantern. The respawn is hell until you become enlightened like a Ninja and acquire the skill to progress. Ninja Gaiden games of today look nice but its mainly just a button mash fest with a cold cut combo thrown in for good measure. I am still getting Ninja Gaiden 3 because Ryu is my homeboy. What has a greater sense of accomplishment, classic or modern Ninja Gaiden? For me, its definitely classic.

That and they're easy to pick up and play. I'd much rather sit down and play through Sonic 3 and Knuckles in one sitting than play for hours a repetitive shooter online.

Totally agree, I can always go back and play Contra, Mega Man, Metroid, Castlevania and the like again and again but that 10 hour HD single-player campaign I don’t really feel like revisiting. Also, I just like the simple pick up and play the older games have and dont really play online. Multiplayer "deathmatches" don't appeal to me. Maybe I will be more into mulitplayer on the Wii U with some fresh Nintendoized ideas.

I will play them if they are fun. This goes for any game made ever.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

And in the end it is as simple as that. I just like to over-analyze things and talk about retro games.

1) Because they are fun
2) Nostalgia
3) Because I like the series now, and I want to see how it started (I had a Sega Genesis growing up, so the N64/Wii opened me up to whole new franchises of fun - it's been awesome to replay the old Mario/Zelda/Metroid games and to know that when my Sega finally craps out, I can still play its greatest hits on the same machine).
4) Mainly, because they are fun.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

That's some of it for me too. If I'm going through a rough patch of life, using my SNES or NES as a sort of time machine is helpful to psychologically return me to a better time. I can do that with my iPod Touch too, making playlists with soundtracks from games I got around a certain period of time. Like a playlists with Super Mario World, Drakkhen, Super Castlevania IV, Gradius III, and TLoZ: A Link to the Past, all of which I had within a month of getting the SNES.

To experience pieces of gaming history I was unfortunate enough to miss the first time around.

@FluttershyGuy: Though self admittedly it was not you at your most “articulate" I still enjoyed your first post. Nice work, didn’t know you were such a retro gamer. I agree games today do feel like they are interactive movies and man I don’t want to spend my limited video game time playing for a little bit, get to objective, watch cut scene, save, and repeat. Right now, the “modern game” I am playing is Metroid: Other M and yikes, I find myself wishing I was playing Super Metroid or NES Metroid instead! As you put it, there is a unique charm to the classics that feels like it has been lost with the bigger budgets. There are so many retro games I still want to get for my collection I cannot decide what to get next whereas I can walk into a store and stare at shelves of new video games and have a tough time finding one I want to plunk down $50-$60 for.

Haha... I have NES and SNES music on my phone too and if I get bored sitting in traffic or whatever man, I just switch over to some Super Castlevania IV or some other video game tracks and suddenly sitting around is not so bad.

Excellent point. ^_^ And no one does character development like Nintendo. <3 I love how I can feel so connected to the main character without the use of dialogue.

and that's another thing nintendo has over the other 2 companies: so many characters and franchises such as mario, link, samus, kirby, f-zero, smash bros, fire emblem, mother, pokemon, starfox, kid icarus to name. which is awesome!

I know, right? Try and find someone who is unfamiliar with video games that can name a character from anything but a Nintendo title.

although sonic has been around 20 years and though he's not bigger than mario, he has become SEGA's mascot. as for master chief, we'll see if he'll have a legacy as long as any of nintendo's popular characters.
