Interestingly enough, that problem never happens to me, having played many games on Nintendo, Sony and Xbox 360. I seem to adapt to the right button layout straight away without thinking.

I have to agree the GameCube is the best controller. It fits into your hand, the analogue never slips, and the shoulder buttons are just perfect. It's a shame Nintendo didn't use them again. The only controller I'd say even gets close to the GameCube is some 3rd Party Dualshock 2's. I figured out a better way of holding a Dualshock (my Analogue Stick was worn smooth) one day, and have used that grip ever since. Oh and I hate the 360 controller. Every time I use one, the buttons are mushy and I can only use my pointer fingers on the shoulder buttons. I typically use my middle finger to use shoulder buttons (it's a part of my Dualshock, GC, and Dreamcast grip) but the 360 makes that impossible, and very uncomfortable.

PlayStation is worse. I don't know how people can play with two joysticks on the bottom and the D-pad on the top. I prefer a joystick, and I use my index fingers for triggers, so the Xbox 360 is actually my main and favorite console. Until the One comes out, I am so buying that.
@SomeBitTripFan The 360 was made for the people that use the regular layout that everyone uses for an Xbox. Index fingers for triggers, thumbs for analog sticks, and switch out your right thumb for buttons A B X and Y. I have never heard of anyone using that layout, so nobody can really complain.

How do you stand using an analogue on the bottom and buttons on top? It's the same concept. Honestly, I don't think it matters where the analogue stick is positioned, so long as it's a good stick.

The layout is why I'm not the best at PSP games. Being a Microsoft gamer I have to shift with my thumb and it gets tiring when on a road trip in a stretch of hours. Somehow Sony gamers play well with it, I don't know how.

That's because the PSP's D-Pad and analogue are terrible, not because of the placement. The D-Pad's so stiff it's like you're fighting it. It's my biggest complaint with the PSP, along with the nub just being a terrible idea and the battery being too quick to die.

N64 and GC controllers are brilliant to use. As someone has mentioned they do look daft but they work brilliantly!

I love the NES pad too. I've never been a fan of the SNES one, I was a Megadrive fan during that time and got on with the pad better.

I'm with him. I think the offset sticks is far more comfortable to use. But, that's what this thread is all about, personal preference.

i am more concerned about the placement of A B X Y. the xbox layout is way better. i am still confused on nintendo systems. A and B need be to changed. X and Y need to be changed, too.

Uh, why would Nintendo change the button layout when it's been like that since the SNES?

But it hasn't.
SNES:
Y X
B A

N64 (note that A now takes primary position):
B CL CU
A CD CR

GC (again, A takes primary placement):

Y
B A X

Wii (again, A takes primary placement):
A (with B on back)

Wii U: Back to
Y X
B A

Now, the GBA kept the NES/GB's B A placement, and (3)DS was in keeping with the SNES, but Nintendo's consoles have not used the same button layout as any previous console until the Wii U reused the SNES button placement.

Classic Controller's etc. aside, mind you.

The GCN controller is the most comfortable controller to ever exist. Not only did it have a delightful contour to it, it also had perfectly sized buttons positioned in a way that you could access them with great ease. The sticks also performed very well, with a very nice range of motion complimenting many of the games for the system perfectly. It is truly an exemplary system.

I think it might be if you have small hands. (I cannot come up with a comfortable button layout to play Megaman X4 with it no matter how hard I try. Same with Capcom VS SNK almost impossible.)

N64 controller was much better for me. Or any of the classic controllers.

Gamecube Controller only really worked well for me in games that you didn't need constant access to 3 buttons or more.

GCN controller is world's worst for 2D fighters with that baby finger size d pad

The GCN controller was the best. I could easily move with the analog stick and the c stick makes some movement really useful.

But I love the d-pad for 2d games, Why are they removing that in the recent 3DS games?

The only drawback to the N64 controller was playing for long hours often strained my left thumb, since the joystick was right in the middle. Also, most third-party replacement controllers' joysticks are terrible, so I say stick with a used original whenever possible.

God, guns, and guts made America; let's keep all three.
