Topic: Why Do People Like A Link to the Past?

I enjoy Link to the Past quite a bit. But only because it's a well made Zelda. But like a lot of OOT it's so standard and basic that the more creative games are far more interesting and creative and have less annoyances etc.

There are some old games that are about as good as they were when released and some that have nothing that hasn't been done in later, far better games. And LTTP is in the middle of those two types of games.

I'm not sure, seems quite inferior to Link's Awakening to me.

Before I begin, let me say that A Link to the Past is not a bad game, but a bad Zelda game. Now, let's continue.

I personally don't get how I see many people loving A Link to the Past. I personally found it boring compared to my personal second-favorite Zelda game: Zelda II. (My favorite Zelda game is Ocarina of Time, but comparing ALttP to Zelda II is more fun, as Zelda II is the most different in the series aside from Majora's Mask) The combat feels lame and repetitive compared to Zelda II, as it really put reflexes and skill to beat the common foe in Zelda II. In ALttP, the enemies are wimps. They die so easily, and the bosses are also underwhelming in terms of memorability. Zelda II's common enemy may die easily from a leveled up sword, but it still takes time to level it up. Also, the dungeons in ALttP was personally really boring and tedious, and I felt like just shutting off the game. In contrast to Zelda II, the palaces were PACKED with monsters out to kill you, and when I explored the palaces, I was scared for my life in case those damn knights come close to me.

...Yeah, that's all I could find bad about ALttP. The graphics are nice, the music is cool, but the gameplay just feels boring and tedious. And in a game in the Legend of Zelda series, that is unacceptable.

Go nuts.

Looks like to me someone didn't like this game cause it was too hard for them, mean while OoT was easy which why i assume it's your favorite, hate on the harder games cause you can't handle, and love the easy ones have fun.

You didn't read the part where he said Zelda 2 was his second favorite. Did you?

Which makes your logic invalid.

My opinion is that ALTTP should be remade on Vita because Tretton says so. My logic is always valid because I said so and therefore my opinion is right.
See what I did there?

I believe it was my first Zelda game...used to play it all the time, and never got far...very memorable times back then.
I dunno about my favorite Zelda game, but its up there.

I love A Link to the Past because throughout the entire game it is just plain FUN to play! It's fast-paced and uncomplicated. The graphics and style are fantastic, the music is memorable and the challenge is just right. If has a few oddball easter eggs like the dude by the sign that are a nice touch and switching between the light and dark worlds was a great way to make a huge world to explore for a game back then. Stepping out into the daylight with the overworld theme starting up after emerging from the sewers still brings a smile to my face everytime.

Try comparing it to OoT, then.

OoT's combat is much easier and way more repetitive. The enemies hardly even put up a fight compared to ALttP, and the bosses are even easier than the normal enemies.

OoT has the most generic and tedious dungeons in the series.

ALttP's gameplay is just as good as any other Zelda game's. The important thing is game design.

That's what I say about Ocarina of Time. A Link to the Past is the best Zelda game.

I love A Link to the Past, while I also love Skyward and Ocarna and would want more of those type of games I would love another game in the style of ALttP overhead gameplay with out stylus controls.

How do you like Zelda 1 and Links awakening?

I don't think it's fair to call a link to the past a "bad zelda game" by comparing it to Zelda 2 because the second game isn't the standard for zelda games (you could call it the black sheep of the series). You're entitled to your opinion, but it's a bit strange to argue that it is a bad "Zelda game" by comparing it to the game least emblematic of the spirit of the series. It would be like saying Super mario bros is a "bad mario game" because it's not like super Mario RPG.

This x10. I don't really care if you don't like Zelda 3 PERSONALLY, but don't you dare call it a bad Zelda game, or I will kick you in the proverbial teeth.

People like it because it's the best SNES game and one of the best games ever made. I finally played it from beginning to end this year and I can say that it was the best game I played all year. It's easily in my top three for Zelda games. Probably second right behind Ocarina of Time.

I love A Link to the Past because it was mindblowing and groundbreaking. For me it's the best of the top-down Zeldas.
One of my best gaming moments wasn't just the awesome puzzles and secrets, beautiful details and wonderful music, but the point where I honestly thought the game is over now (defeating Agahnim) when all I accomplished was just getting through the introduction. A Link to the Past was the first game of epic proportions! But maybe every first Zelda is.

I think you have it all wrong, Zelda II is a bad Zelda game. It doesn't give you much puzzles, unlike A Link to the Past. It's the least fun and the least like a Zelda game. Zelda II Not only puts a shame to the platforming and RPG name. It's an embarrassment to the Zelda series.

Wow. I just laugh at all of these responses. I waited for a while for you guys to actually say something other than "ALttP is better because the dungeons are better," and all sorts of other stuff. I just KNEW that you guys would say that.

With regards to the dungeons, while it's true that Zelda II's layout is predictable and bland, the enemies in Zelda II’s dungeons were much harder to kill, giving me satisfaction, when I killed those knights. In ALttP, the common enemy in the dungeons was basically a wimp, and the bosses were just... stupidly easy too. I thought the dungeons sucked too.

Yes, Ocarina of Time was easier, but hey, I don't just enjoy hard games. Personally, I thought that Ocarina of Time's dungeons and combat were MASSIVELY improved upon from ALttP. Also, about The Legend of Zelda and Link's Awakening, the former was basically an open world for you to explore to your heart's content (though combat still sucked, but hey, I love exploring open worlds; that’s why Super Metroid is my favorite game, but that’s another topic), and Link's Awakening's dungeons and writing was what saved the deal, even when the combat also sucked. Ocarina of Time FINALLY brought both great combat and dungeons, even if they were easy. Plus, the combat of OoT was fun and engaging. Like Zelda II, seeing the enemy have a death animation brought me satisfaction, compared to the 2D Zeldas (except Zelda II, but that's from killing the REALLY difficult enemies), as they just burst into… clouds? Heh, it’s funny how the little things can make a huge difference.

And besides, it's one man's opinion. If you love the game, fine. I'm cool with that. Why bother to try to change someone else's opinion on the Internet? It's pointless. Also, you want a true embarrassment to Zelda? Try the CD-i games instead. Finally, I didn't criticize EVERYTHING about ALttP. I thought the music was epic (Dark World FTW), and I thought the graphics held up to this day. But you people didn't catch that because you only see what you want to see. Plus, I consider gameplay to be the most important thing about a game. Take VVVVVV for instance: horrific graphics (now, I'm not sure, I like the retro style), but engaging, punishingly difficult gameplay making me want to play more and more. In contrast, I personally didn't have fun with ALttP with combat and gameplay felt uninteresting; on the other hand, I had more fun with Zelda II because of the high difficulty (is it even that hard at all? I didn't die once in Death Mountain, and people kept calling that place a hellhole). This is all just a matter of opinion of the two games. Period.

And for those people who say I'm wrong about my opinion, I have only one picture:

A Link to the Past is in my top 5 all-time video games. And I've played a lot in my 33 years of gaming. But as you said, you either like something or you don't.

Plain old gamer :)

Kaeobais

Ocarina of Time improved upon Link to the Past? Well duh, because Ocarina of Time came afterwards AND it's 3D. Of course it'd be improved. You also keep saying the combat sucks in the top down zelda games. Why? How is the Zelda 2 combat any better? You can jab high or low. That's kind of it.

And again, comparing Zelda 2 and ALTTP is ridiculous.

I'm not mad that you don't like Zelda 3. I couldn't care less, really. But at least have sensible arguments.
