I've noticed that several of my friends just don't like Zelda games. It's not that I really care, but being a gamer I just cannot watch them avoid such great gems as Zelda. I offered to have some of them borrow it (even tried to force it down their throat, or game slot in this case cough), but they just don't seem to have any interest in them. I guess I'll just let them enjoy their modern warfare or halo...
So you need an explanation as to why someone does not like a game franchise you do. It is simple, not everyone can like the same things in life. It is pointless to even wonder why. It is the same with every little thing in life.
There are many little, ungrateful "gamers" who do think that Halo and Call of Duty are the greatest games on the planet. I enjoy Halo and Call of Duty myself, but I enjoy Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon more.
My brother hates them because they involve using your brain. Something he's not real good at. To him it's boring if you have to figure things out. Just think of it this way. Only smart people enjoy Zelda so if you understand the thrill of these games you must be pretty intelligent. Same with movies. Flashy explosions and CGI with no plot always impress dummies. Smart people like good plots and character development.

And then every game since has been exactly the same as Ocarina of Time, with some new "gimmick" that is more often derivative to the gameplay than helpful. Every Zelda game has the same basic plot structure, the same basic dungeon design, the same basic gameplay flows, the same basic puzzles - each Zelda game gets easier and easier - not because the raw challenge is less, but because it's ultimately more and more familiar. I literally flew through Spirit Tracks because there was not one single thing in that game that I hadn't seen a similar instance of in previous Zelda games.
I've said this a hundred times now, but as far as I'm concerned that Zelda framework is horribly stale, and the series needs a dramatic re-invention before I will start to appreciate it again.
It's the same problem that plagues Dragon Warrior games when compared to Final Fantasy. Dragon Warrior has remained so traditional, that the formulae is stale. I can still breeze through those games, and have a bit of fun, but Final Fantasy remains my favourite long-running game series because it utterly reinvents itself, while still keeping familiar elements, each and every time. Not every Final Fantasy reinvention is a success (see VIII), but not once when I play a new FF game do I get the same feeling of "booooooring, already done this" that I do with Zelda.
Oh my! Some people actually don't like a game series you do? Whatever shall we do? I know, let's make them write 1000 times "I will blindly like what others expect me to like and never have my own opinion."
Then while they do that you can play Madden 2010, Modern Warfare 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV. Remember, even if you don't like them you can't have your own opinion and must follow blindly.
Please tell me you get what I'm saying in this. Sarcasm is a great tool, but it is lost on the internet sometimes.
I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.
Like a few people have said already, I used to be a big Zelda fan but I just can't bring myself to care anymore. After Wind Waker I totally lost the desire to play any more of them because they're so formulaic. I picked up a used copy of Twilight Princess but haven't even booted it up.
I also don't have the time for 60+ hour epics anymore and would rather play something short that I know I'll complete. If a typical playthrough takes 15+ hours then I start to hesitate on even beginning it. Now, 8-hour games, love those.

listen to this man, Quikman, for he is wise, and his words are truth.

I love the Ocarina 'formula' and am saddened (not) and surprised (not) by some of the comments in this thread. boo-hoo
I want the next Zelda to be 100+ hours long with an overworld twice the size of TP that is chock full of things to investigate, explore, and collect. My attention span is pretty good and I appreciate the challenge. The more effort you put in, the more fulfilling the experience can be. Short games suck by comparison, they are throw away, disposable, call it what you will.
I DON'T CARE what others think about the things I enjoy. So long as I am enjoying them, I'm reet.
