Final Fantasy VII and Phantasy Star IV.Haven't tried any of the Mario RPG's. How are they compared to the standard fantasy/scifi RPG games?

They're very different, and rely more on humor and reaction/timing-based gameplay to make up for their lack of strategic depth(limited equipment upgrades, simplified leveling systems for certain games, limited party systems, etc.). Honestly, despite being turn-based, they are action-RPGs through-and-through, and shouldn't really be compared to more traditional outings like Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star.
