Any shot you opened it up to clean this NES?

If you did the zero force slot wasn't slid into place right and that will make it never lock keeping the game down, but that said if you didn't perhaps the spring on it rotted and died of old age. That thing has this weird piece if metal you can't see in the center front on a grooved track, if that goes, or if the piece wasn't slotted back onto the motherboard right it will fail and games just pop up.

I gave my NES away like 15 years ago but I used to always have to blow in the carts or they wouldn't work.

I owned a couple of NES-es back in the day. What I learned from experience was that it's best NOT to push the cartridge to the end of your NES as it bends the NES' pins.

Well if it came that way either they screwed up a repair or the latch up front has broken and the only thing you can do is either replace it, replace the system if it's too challenging to fix it, or jam another game above it in the slot when it's down to keep it there.

As far as usage, a firm lock is best. Sure perhaps over time it could flatten the pins out a bit so it reads a little more shaky, but if you pop out the pins (open the system) and use a safety pin or something nearly that small to get under each pin and bend it back out again towards the center it will work like new. I've been repairing the systems short of soldering work off and on since the mid 1990s so I have ideas how to attack repairs on it.
