Gamecube - still fairly modern, with a few classics that haven't been re-released. Most importantly has a unique but excellent controller.

Depends on what you like and what you grew up with. Honestly I can't pick one I enjoy most of them NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS, PS2, Neo Geo etc. etc.

The one I don't enjoy a whole lot is the N64. A few games like Goldeneye or the WWE games but for the most part the N64 didn't age well.

It still is, and will always be, the NES. I'm not sure why this is even up for debate.

She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

GameCube with GB player.

There you have access to all the GC, GB, GBC and GBA libraries (which includes NES and SNES ports and remakes).

Add animal crossing and the Zelda collectors discs and you're done.

For that extra spice, add other retro collection discs.... Some Dreamcast and play station ports... Get a GBA-GC link cable... And some stickers...

Of course.

Although PC is second to none for its vast back catalogue my point is that I wouldn't consider something capable of playing Doom 2016 to be a retro console

If it's retro to Nintendo, why not to us?

On that note, although I don't personally count it as retro, my vote would go to the Wii U.

The majority of worthwhile NES, SNES and N64 titles are available on the Wii or Wii U VC. Wii U also benefits from DS and GBA virtual console and backwards compatibility with Wii games. And there are plenty of controller options (classic, pro, gamepad).

Well, the Wii U is dead according to the internet. Retro systems are basically dead consoles right?
