The, oft quoted, "Golden Era" of video games, referred, very much, to those, sadly, very few years, when the greatest of all JRPGs were released on the SNES.
Ending with the brilliant TERRANIGMA, preceded by genuine "classics" such as ILLUSION OF GAIA/TIME, EARTHBOUND, FF6, SECRET OF EVERMORE, BREATH OF FIRE, SECRET OF MANA - and, of course, LINK TO THE PAST! etc, these were the days when, it seemed, back then, every new release contained that essence of "magic" that came with experiencing never-before-seen sights, sounds, and gameplay twists and turns that ONLY came in that era of "the new"!
Nothing was "dissed" by players β because everything was amazing!
The first insertion of that, reassuringly solid, cartridge, meant, from the opening "set the scene" moments, to the, almost sadly-triumphant, endings, day upon day of wonder and magic!
Everything was still so new back then.
Nothing felt old and stale - because nothing WAS old and stale!
Call me an old nostalgia-freak ( I really don't mind! π ) but I truly long for the day when Nintendo ( I assume they still own the rights to publish these iconic JRPGs? ) announce that they're releasing them all for the SWITCH!!
Yeah, yeah, I know I'm probably " wishing on a star " ....... But, OH how I hope that I'm NOT!! ππ
@Yosheel "SNES games, specifically classic JRPGs, are awesome and since I live in the past I want them on Switch."
At least, that's how I read it. π Pretty confusing post, to be honest.
Just joshing you songwriter. In the same vein that you want SNES games, I want Game Cube games. But I do have to say, while gamers are more toxic than ever, I will never agree with the notion that games were better in the past. My favorite game is a PS1 game, but I think now is the best time to be a gamer. All three of the "big 3" consoles have something to to offer.
Nothing was dissed back then as the Internet (especially social media) wasn't a thing. More avenues for discussion today. SNES games were great. Plenty of modern games are great also. There are enough retro styled games with 16 bit sensibilities still being made, so this should be a great time for gamers like yourself. Enjoy!
Apologies if my post was a bit long and wandering π Must admit I didn't think it was THAT long, but, hey-ho!
I certainly don't "live in the past" - as my collection of 45 Switch titles, 114 PS4, and 53 XBox games will witness! But, yes, I freely admit, (as I inferred in my, totally harmless, I hope, post), I do still remember, with great admiration, the achievements of JRPG designers and producers of 25 years ago, and the effect they had on gamers!
Maybe some on these boards think that's "sad"? Well, that's fine with me. I'd rather be the way I am than like many gamers who apparently think the entire history of gaming only began about 12 months ago!!!! π
Absolutely NO disrespect meant here mate, but would you be prepared to tell me your age?
It's just that I can't work out whether your reply was meant to sound "sarcastic" or not, and I honestly would like to reply to you ( respectfully! ) but, however weird it may sound, it would be easier if I knew roughly how old you are!
@songwriter24 What you are saying isnβt sad at all and would be welcome if it came into fruition. But Nintendo does not own the rights to most of the games listed, even if they were once exclusive. A good example of this is the Secret series. Not too long ago, an HD remake of the Secret of Mana releases earlier this year, yet it was only on Sony consoles. The original game is now even on Steam. Unless Nintendo could work out a deal with the third parties that own the rights of the non-first party games listed, you might just have to find another way to access these titles. But there are still many other great RPGs that are on/will soon be on the Switch, such as some of the classic Final Fantasy games and Octopath Traveler.

Take it easy all
Apologies if I offended. Yosheel, I believe jokingly, asked for a TL;DR and I obliged adding in a joke of my own. I didn't believe your post was too lengthy, for the record, and I read every word.
Nothing wrong with enjoying the classics. As I said, my favorite game of all time is a PS1 game. I also am a big advocate for Nintendo releasing their virtual console again, or at the very least adding more than just NES games to their online service. SNES would be welcome. I'd love to play Super Mario World or even Final Fantasy VI. I'm just personally holding out for N64 and especially GameCube, as I enjoyed those more.
I would say that story-telling in games isn't what it used to be, but there are still plenty of gems out there in this new age gaming world.
@songwriter24 I'm old enough to remember computer club at school with a ZX81 lol. I meant in the sense where folk would still argue which is the better system. C64, Speccy or SNES and Megadrive.
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
@GrailUK You mean which system is most inferior to the Speccy?
Earthbound really shouldn't be in there, I don't recall it being a commercial success at the time. It is easily one of my favorite games, but I never saw it in a store.

@songwriter24 Maybe it is just the location where I lived, but I remember vivid disagreements over SNES games and there being plenty of bad ones. While Square seemed to be guaranteed gold, they did release Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (or Americans are too dumb for JRPGs). Enix also had some hit and misses, and Capcom's meet too series, Breath of Fire was very abusive of the bad aspects of JRPGs (grinding, brutal random battle encounter rates).
I think a big difference is that most of us that grew up then experienced a sort of Stockholm syndrome. The games we had (or could borrow) were what we were stuck with for months at a time. I remember hating the life out of my copies of NES Golgo-13 and Renegade that my grandma bought me for Christmas, but still putting a lot time into them because it at least was something different. Even now, I will at least kick the tires on those titles for a little while before I remember exactly why I dislike them so much.
@ReaderRagfish
Eh....
It looked too NES for me after i have watched from Youtube just now.
I still only have 1 GBA game, K-1 Pocket Grand Prix GBA, played on my NDS Lite.
@HobbitGamer I definitely remember seeing EarthBound at Target, came close to getting my parents to buy it for me several times as a kid.
I even remember seeing it at Kohl's. At a time when Kohl's had an actual video game section. (I think if they do sell games now, it's strictly impulse-buy budget stuff.)
I don't recall seeing it at Best Buy, at least not when old ads suggest it was once $30, let alone $6. If I had known it was available that cheap, I would've tried to get there ASAP to pick it up. (regrets not picking up very likely the same Blockbuster copy I had rented multiple times, when they were selling off their SNES games) I do remember not getting it nor Chrono Trigger from Walmart when the first store opened in my area at the end of the SNES' lifespan.
@songwriter24 Hey man you have a serious case of nostalgia goggles going on.
"Nothing was "dissed" by players β because everything was amazing!" Are you kidding me? That was the era of "Sega does what NintenDON'T" and there were plenty of debates and arguments over which game, which system and which whatever was best. It's just that the internet wasn't a thing like it is now, so a lot of it went unnoticed.
There was a lot of great games back then, and a lot of junk. Just like today. The main difference is today is the internet era, and in this era, we hear far more than we really need to. And everyone comments.

If you weren't going to bother actually reading the post then what on earth is the point of you posting a "critical" reply??
IF you actually read it you'll see I was specifically talking about JRPGs β and nothing else!
So yes! Of course I have "nostalgia goggles" on β for an era of video games that produced some of the greatest, classic, JRPG titles ever released!
Just because, probably, 10 or 12 of these truly brilliant games were released 20 plus years ago, does that mean they should just be forgotten by those who have memories of how incredible they were to play?!?
With respect, your comments re "Sega vs Nintendo" are totally redundant! Again(!!) I was referring to the GAMES, such as the ones I quoted, and not any system v system angst - which has always been pretty puerile anyway!!
And I don't remember ANYONE "dissing" games such as Chrono Trigger, FF7, Link To The Past, Terranigma, et al! β Unless, of course, they "hated" the genre, in which case they wouldn't even BUY the games!
Yes of course there was no internet, and of course there were good games and bad games, as with any era β but again, I ask, totally respectfully, what the heck has any of that got to do with what I posted?!?
I suppose I'll get hit with another TL:DR but...... whatever! So here goes!
My point, quite simply, is that I remember, with great respect and admiration, the brilliant JRPGs of Twenty + years ago, and I would love to see them released on the Switch - or whatever Nintendo's next console might be!
That's it, in a nutshell.
Maybe I should have just said that, and nothing else, but I stupidly thought these forums were, amongst many other things, for conversations amongst like-minded gamers about titles and times they'd enjoyed β and which still held great memories!
After all, not every knowledgeable gamer is 15!
Some have longer memories than that π
