Topic: What Do You Consider Retro?

How old does a game/console have to be before it becomes retro? Most people, at least in my experience, will count anything that was around in their childhood retro, which I guess is why more and more people see the GBA as a fossil.

Personally I wouldn't count anything past 2000 as retro, probably I actually remember the release of most post-21st century consoles.

But what about you?

Systems & games that are two generations behind. When the Wii/Ps3/360 is outpaced the GC/Ps2/Xbox is retro.

When the next gen gets into full swing with the release of the PS4 and 720, the GameCube, PS2, Xbox and anything before them will be retro in my mind.

Yeah, I'd say anything that isn't current gen or last gen is retro. That's the way I've always looked at it at least.

I always consider two gens ago from the current one retro.

I had a thread about this a while ago so I will just post my thoughts here since that thread has been dead for six months.

Anyway my thoughts on retro are.....

I think what people mean by retro is anything thats not this current gen system (Wii U, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, 3DS).

My definition would be anything up to Dreamcast is retro (at least 10 years old and out production for while)but thats just me.

As for remakes of games themselves sure Super Mario All Stars on the Wii for example may be a port of the SNES version but I dont consider the Wii version retro.

I know some might consider Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 retro now especially with the release of the Wii U and the announcement of the PS4 but I still cant consider them retro, maybe in 5 years I might.

As far as this site goes I think anything not current gen is consider retro but thats to make it easy and to keep arguments from creeping up on whats retro and whats not. In truth retro is different to each person.

I used to travel the stars, then I discovered Earth, and these incredibly addicting things called 'Video Games.'

I would consider anything up to and including the N64 and PS1 as retro, but even then I think the divide between the pixel art of old and polygon based games is a significant one.

I just can't view the PS2, Gamecube or Xbox as "retro". The types of games we saw on those consoles are essentially the same as we get today, just with less advanced graphics.

Considering how young the industry is, nothing younger than fifteen years should considered retro.

This. My personal perception of retro is mostly based on the shift fom pixel art games to 3D.
I'd say anything before PS1/N64 is retro. Next gen, i.e. when PS4 and X720 are out, I'll probably consider gen 5 retro, too.

For me, the term "retro" basically covers everything released before the year 2000. Its easy for me to remember.

I wouldn't consider anything that's disc-based to be "retro". They can be old, but discs are still "modern" technology, while the cartridge based games are a thing of the past. Aside from handhelds of course.

I consider anything two generations or older to be "retro". In other words, I call the Gamecube retro..
