Topic: What are the best obscure Virtual Console games

Posts 1 to 20 of 31

Good day all,
I am currently in the process of mining the vast depths of the virtual console service for some of the hidden gems and I'm looking for suggestions. I mean the really obscure gems. I say that because my virtual console collection totals over 120 games, so I have nearly all the "classics" and most of the ones that are just mildly obscure. I'm sure though, that with over 400 games on the service, that I am still missing some genuinely great retro gaming experiences.

I like almost all genres, and review scores are basically irrelevant . I just downloaded Monster Liar for the TG16, which scored a 4, but I found it to be a pretty good game overall.

Some of the more notable games that I've only recently discovered are:
Adventures of Lolo 2 (NES)
Landstalker (Genesis)
Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis)
Shock Troopers (NeoGeo)
Sin and Punishment (N64)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Strider (Genesis)
Beyond Oasis (Genesis)
Ufouria: The Saga (NES)
Wild Guns (SNES)

To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.

Wild Guns is great, perhaps even better than Sin and Punishment. I also found Beyond Oasis good, but not on the level of Landstalker, which I ultimately thought was the better Zelda clone. Strider is a game not in my collection, but one that I played originally on the genesis, maybe I should revisit it.

Ufouria, on the the other hand, is one I know nothing about. What is the general premise?

Ufouria is an exploration game like Metroid. Unlike Metroid though, it has a map so you don't get lost and it also has multiple characters to find and play as.

Anyways here's my recommendations:

Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa (Import)
DoReMi Fantasy (Import)
Star Parodier (Import)

@Waymores_Blues - Thanks. I may have to check into Uforia as the metroidvania games are always some of my favorites. As for Star Parodier, its a shmup isn't it? To a certain degree, its hard to mess up that genre, but is there anything that distinguishes it from a lot of the other shooters on VC. I do agree though, that DoReMi Fantasy is one of the better platformers for the SNES. Thanks again

Beyond Oasis
Wild Guns
Aero the Acrobat 2
Spin Master

I've heard good things about Dungeon Explorer

"Practice hospitality. bless and do not curse." Romans 12:13-14

@Rawk_Hawk I actually prefer the first Aero to the second, but I'm really just splitting hairs. I'm not familiar with either Spin Master or Dungeon Explorer though.

Ristar. It is equally as good a Sega Genesis game as the Sonic games.

Bioshock is 10 years old. Let's play through its horrific environment and see why its so beloved!

@Luigiman200 - I agree, Dynamite Headdy is a great Treasure platformer. It's weird, but good.

@kkslider5552000 - I actually prefer Ristar to the sonic games. It's probably my favorite platformer on the Genesis

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep 'em coming.

MUSHA is among my favorite Shooters I've played. Final Soldier and Soldier Blade are good as well. Then there's Lords of Thunder, if that's obscure enough. Oh, and Star Parodier is good fun, as well, especially if you're a shmup beginner.

I quite liked Breath of Fire II as the only obscure VC RPG.

Monster World IV is a great Platformer. Some say it's too easy, but I actually thought it could've been easier. Dragon's Curse (a better version of Wonderboy II: Dragon's Trap) and Wonderboy in Monster World are also good fun, though Monster World IV is better by a large margine in my opinion.

Super Dodgeball is a fun little game. Won't last you that long, but I still think it's worth the trip.

I don't think Blaster Master is obscure, but I'll recommend it, anyways.

If you're sadistic, StarTropics may be something to look into.

@CanisWolfred - Lords of thunder is genuinely great I agree. I've not played either of the Soldier games, though I have heard good things. Breath of Fire II is in my collection; I too found it enjoyable. I downloaded and played Wonder Boy in Monster World and it is legitimately one of my favorite games on the service; that final boss is hard as nails though.

Regarding, Monster World IV, i have had several people tell me that it is significantly better than WB in MW, but is there something specifically that stands out about it?

Both Blaster Master and StarTropics are excellent games in the Metroid and Zelda genres respectively, but I don't remember Startropics being sadistic. Maybe I'm just not remembering it correctly, It's been since the NES era that I played it. About Super Dodgeball though, I thought it was mostly a two player affair, is it a good single player experience?

also alien soldier for the genesis/mega drive
check that one, and bio miracle bokutte upa is a nice game, i beat that a long time ago

@ogo79 - I think you're the second person to recommend that game, but I have absolutely no idea what it is.

@Oh_well It's a side-scrolling run and gun video game. It came out in NA exclusively for the SEGA Channel in '95. You can download it on the Wii VC for 500 points.

Who are you?

Have you checked Ironclad (I think ppl was clamouring about it back then..) and Ogre Battle on Snes and N64?

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my's important.

MUSHA is a game I've been considering. A lot of shmups feel relatively similar to me though. Maybe that's why I enjoyed Monster Lair despite its unfavorable review. It is at least very unique.

@mariobro4 - I love Ogre Battle: MotBQ on the SNES. Turn based strategy is really one of my favorite genres. The original Vandal Hearts for the PS1 is actually one of my favorite games ever. It was criminally underrated if you ask me but thats a discussion for anohter time/forum.

Ironclad though is not a game I'm familiar with.

Splatter House on TurboGraphix-16, maybe?
That one was pretty fun.
