there have been tons of shoot em up titles from hudson softs star soldier series varying from many consoles such as the NES SNES TurboGrafix16 and the n64 as well as the wiiware remake but were you ever a fan of a certain one and if so what were your favorites? (also corbie i know that starsoldier series is like childs play for you but considering that i don't have any kind of shoot em ups like you do i'm kinda stuck ^^") I Liked the import versions Star Parodier and Final Soldier its just the way the weapons worked and the music was awesome. in my opinion for a TG16 Game

Yeah I loved it. It would make a great release on DSiWare. You can import the original sometimes for GBA on Play-asia.com for like 5-10 bucks.

@Slapshot: yes my thoughts exactly you could team up with someone online and go for an all shoot out mode who ever dies first loses you can have a set amount of lives and everytime you win you gain experience everytime you lose you lose exprience and that would be very simple i think to make

@Tails86..... man that sounds like a good time. Ive got to get another copy of this game so I can play it again. I now have a huge urge to play it again I prefer the original game as I like the hardware limitations they had to make the games to me made the games the best.

I have yet to play Star Parodier and I have always wanted too. I actually barely played games at all for a few years when I went to college with the exception of Tony Hawk, Smash Bros and Final Fantasy 8. I have so many games to catch up on top of the great new games releasing constantly. ....... Cant wait to see a review of that one though.

I still need to play some of those. I don't have a lot of SHMUP experience. Is Star Porodier a good place to start?

the game is varly simple for the first few levels and unlike the regular star soldiers instead of blowing up your characters some of them just wave white flags of peace letting you know HEY I GIVE UP! and when you face off against bosses when you finish them they just fall off the screen and say GAHHH!!!!!! Its pretty funny you should see the Intro its the best and if you know any Japanese you'll love it i wish i could understand the story but from what i know Mother Brain escaped to another planet and Cesar Bomber Man and the PC Engine characters are trying to put a stop to him when your PC Engine you have some attacks that make you shoot out CDs which is pretty funny and also with bomberman he of course uses bombs but you havto play it its crazy wild and just down right good shoot em up

The TG-16 was never released here in Ireland so I only discovered Soldier games on VC. I have to say I really enjoy them. Soldier Blade has become one of my favourite shmups.@sushie: Star Parodier is an excellent game.

yeah me too the WiiWare one made me very upset though 2 levels and stunning graphics and only a highschool wifi function Hudson as been able to do x2 better then that before they should have made it atleast 8 levels each with increasing difficulty then it would see be seeing the light of day on the WiiWare Service.

and what a rememorable game that was my first ever shoot em up back in the arcade days we had a arcade machine by a putt putt golf and games building with that arcade on it and constantly played it when everyone else did golf i wouldn't even begin to tell you how many quarters that thing ate then when it came on the VC i went ballistic i still play it from time to time

They rock. SSR was a good game, I played it a lot when I first got it, and I got a pretty high score on the 2-minute for a while (I think I broke 1.1 mil) and they actually inspired me to go back and play the old games in the series, which are phenomenal! Star Parodier is pretty amusing, but all the Parody-games tend to be watered down, not as fun, and really more to make you laugh and fondly remember the game being parodied. Parodius always had this effect--Gradius style gameplay, dumbed-down. There was a good ARC Parodius game (Parodius Da! I think?) that actually had awesome level design.
Star Force is one of the first videogames I ever played. Despite that clunky old feeling, it's actually quite a well-aging arcade game!
Vanishing Earth for 64 kinda sucked imo.
I thought Final Soldier and Soldier Blade were my favorites, fyi. SSR was awesome too, just didn't have the regular play mode and I've never been huge on score-running....makes games a bit too monotonous and drains the fun out of playing them (read: Guitar Hero syndrome, although these games came out way, way before haha). I'm a much bigger fan of low/no death runs, adding score-running to the mix once I've gotten that part down.

No Wii U yet.... Not enough first party wow titles to pull me in yet... And Nintendo's got a ways to go to repair the damage done during the Wii generation.

I agree Tails. I would've liked Star Soldier R to be a proper 8-level game, however I do love to play it still and like trying to discover the little scoring secrets there are.edit: Haha, I didn't know there was an arcade release of Soldier Blade. Was there much difference?

almost the same except the music was a little bit tighter edge like the boss fights would be very fast and epic sounding especially the last battle oh my god what pure epic music but other then the the music and a little faster frame rate i think it was not much else changed

@Tails86 - he's easy--you just gotta deal sustained damage the whole time. If you got hit at all, you're pretty much sunk. I tend to launch my satelites whenever i can't get side-shot damage on him, and I re-attatch when he's off-screen or un-hittable to regain their shot rate. I recall back-shotting him at some point too, but to be fair it's probably been 8 months since I've touched it.
Keep in mind, if you get hit...at all, you're probably done. I've had a couple runs where I got hit (back to double-forward shot/2 sats) and have still managed to deal enough damage to kill him with a few seconds remaining, but you really need the firepower of being fully-powered to deal enough damage.

He's pretty tough. If I lose the 5-way shot before I reach him I can't beat him either. You need to hit the little round bits on the sides of his head if I remember.
