Topic: Was Donkey Kong the first ever jumping platformer?

I've always felt a platformer needed the ability to jump, the ability to ascend or descend to another platform without the use of staying attached to something to 'platform' so in that respect I think Donkey Kong was the first. But if you're talking about a solitary screen puzzle/action game where you move around on a platform or more to swat at enemies or knock them off the screen, then no. Space Panic to me, like Lode Runner isn't a platformer.

But you can descend to another platform without staying attached to a platform in Lode Runner, so it is a Platformer to you (now, if you had said ascend AND descend...).

No, Space Panic was technically, according to Wikipedia.
Might want to google it more though.

I know that's the first platformer, but there's no jump in it. Not saying non-jumping games can't be platformers, but I want to know if Donkey Kong introduced it to the genre.

Oh, sorry misread the thread title ^^*.

A platform game is a game that relies on platforms basically. Since games that had the platforms before Donkey Kong didn't create much of challenge to them like repeatedly jumping to avoid obstacles, Donkey Kong would be the first to perfect the platforming genre.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Yeah but not all the levels in Donkey Kong count. If it was all like the first it would be a ladder game. You can jump but there are no platforms.
