Topic: Twilight Princess - GameCube versus Wii - Fight!

I'm new to the 3D Zelda world. Just beat Ocarina of Time on the 3DS and now am playing Majora's Mask on my N64.

When the time comes from Twilight Princess, which is a better version to play as that first play through experience. I still have a GameCube hooked up to my projector/sound system and would be playing Wii games on my Wii U. Thoughts?

Not sure if this is retro enough ...

It doesn't really matter.

Waggle works fine, but adds nothing and isn't immersive. I prefer the WiiMote pointer controls over the analogue stick and the game does run in 16:9 on Wii, so I guess go with that.

Although if you've played OOT and MM, maybe you should play Wind Waker next?

Oh I am - Twilight Princess is my next decision point of what version to get. Don't think I'll be patient enough to wait for the remake for Wind Waker for Wii U.

I am leaning towards the Wii version if only because the Wii U will play it and I find the WiiMote/Nunchuck very comfortable. Not a fan of pointer controls though ...

As far as i know:
Gamecube: Link holds his sword Left-handed? Traditional controls.
Wii: Link holds it right handed? Motion controls.
Probably comes down to personal preference....

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

Gamecube is the true version. Link is traditionally left-handed, and is left handed in Twilight Princess as well. The Wii version, to accomodate right-handed people for motion controls, flipped the entire game, so now Link is right-handed, but Hyrule is completely mirrored. Lake Hylia is where Gerudo Desert should be, and vice-versa. The motion controls for Wii Twilight Princess aren't that special anyway. The Wii version was simply a simultanious port of the Gamecube version so that the Wii had a Zelda game at launch, that's all.

I own and have played thru the Wii version of the game. However,...looking back, I wish I had played it on the Gamecube.

Despite me not liking Twilight Princess at all, I still keep my eyes open wherever I am for a cheap, used copy of TP on the Gamecube.

Twilight Princess is my favourite Zelda game.

I prefer the Gamecube version by a small margin. I find the traditional controls better than the wii version and it represents the original artistic vision.

The Wii version is still great though. The only other difference aside from the controls and horixontal flip is the widescreen presentation. Additionally, for European players it is the only version that is in 480p.

I like Link to be right handed, so my vote is for Wii.

I think it just depends on whether or not you like the motion controls in the Wii version or the more traditional controls in the Game Cube version. I personally like the Wii version because it makes aiming with the Slingshot and Bow pretty fun, plus it has 16:9 widesceen support.

You can get Twilight Princess for $20 on Wii brand new.

What the hell? They COMPLETELY horizontally flipped the Wii version?? I didn't know that! Couldn't they just flip Link's model, or simply edit it??

Thanks for all the feedback - it seems that the GameCube version is getting the most positive feedback so far - if I can find one at a good price I'll go that way - $20 brand new for the Wii version is kinda crazy though

Add my vote to the Game Cube column. While I did try the Wii version (after savoring the original) the Wii Remote added nothing, and in fact removed some nuance from the swordplay.
@Intrepid encapsulated the differences nicely, including the easily overlooked design compromise which mirrored the canonical world. Blasphemy!

Playing the Wii Version of TP through the Wii U makes a big improvement visually due HDMI (my opinion), the Controls would also prepare you for Skyward Sword if you haven't already played it (use of Motion Plus makes a big improvement from the waggle of TP).
Although it is good to play TP how it was originally intended on the GC. For me its a close call

Same here. Unfortunately, everywhere I've seen it, it's always at least $40-$50, and I can't bring my self to pay that much seeing as how I didn't really care for it (it's probably in my bottom third of Zelda games if I were to rank my faves).

I wondered the same thing at the time, and to be honest, I have no idea why. Perhaps they had to rush so is could be ready for launch, and it was just the fastest way?

For those that are curious, I have Nintendo's official player's guide for the game, which was designed for the Wii version. It has the Gamecube maps in the back, and there is a box where Nintendo comments on the switch:

East Meets West
Link is a lefty in the GCN version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (as he has appeared in previous Legend of Zelda adventures), but has become right-handed for the game's Wii version to conform to the remote-swinging control scheme. The difference has led to a direction reversal between the two versions. What is east in the GCN version is west in the Wii version, and vice versa. The following maps for the GCN version reflect that change.

So yeah, they don't really explain why it had to be that way, but at least Nintendo officially acknowledged it. Interesting bit of Zelda/video game history.

Wii version! Because I bought it instead of the GC version. Makes sense huh?

for me this depends entirely on whether pointer bow and arrow controls make up for the disasterous use of the nun-chuck's terrible motion controls.
