Contra and Super C...

Those games are not that difficult. I played Super C on my 3DS, and I already past the first three levels within 30 minutes. I didn't die that much, but it took me ten to fifteen minutes just to get used to playing. It was the first game I played where you aim and move at the same time in a side-scroller. After that, you shouldn't die that much, the longest of the three levels that I played was the third one in the jungle, I was running and shooting wondering when it would end. After I beat what I thought was a boss, I had to run on the path which was sinking in the ground. I was saying to myself, "How long is this level?" But there wasn't too much after that.

I never played Contra, though, and nobody ever described that game as "difficult" before. I wouldn't know since I never played it, but I could be wrong.

Contra Hardcorps for the Mega Drive completely obliterates Contra and especially Super C when it comes to sheer brutal difficulty. ;) I managed to complete every single multiple path, alternate Boss and got all of the endings, no easy feat! But when you've got determination and a head full of wavey retro locks nothing on the face of planet funkatron can stop you. B-) Hardcorps is hardcore, none of these modern day Xbox brats and playstation panzies could even make it half way through the game....Heck, they probably couldn't get past the 2nd stage!

Look at those nasty 'n limited life sucking Mega Drive colors. ;)

And don't underestimate Contra 4...That game is practically unbeatable without the extra lives cheat.
Can't speak for Shattered Soldier and Uprising, since i've never Dude & dipped into Playstation Contra. But i need to, so i can finally complete the entire oldschool classic 2D Contra series.

Adventure Island - honestly, has anybody here actually finished this game? I have, but of course with the infinite lives cheat. Nobody can finish this NES-Nasty with just a few lives, it's impossible. Even with infinite Adventure Island's difficulty rivals anything on the NES that i've experienced!

Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient ship of Doom - NG2 was more forgiving than the original, but III basically spat Crystal Pepsi in your face and demanded you to eat your spinich! this game was just grueling, never have I mastered such kinetic ninja lightning fast Neo-Rad skills. To make things even more difficult is that you have limmited continues. I completely fluked out on the final boss! With only 1 trinket left of health, my heart was litterally blasting out of my he-man chest while i was sitting in a pile of INtense surfer swet! :o

Ghosts 'n Goblins - The last 2 stages were H-E-L-L. And no i never bothered beating the game twice to get the real ending

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse -Toughest Catlevania there is period. You will without a doubt grow vamp fangs after mustering up the Belmont courage and taking down Drac's 3rd Castle of supreme SkelaNasties! Rondo was tough, but III takes the frankenCake in the entire franchise. B-)

Battletoads - I'll admit, it's been quite a while since I've played it but i could never get past that iconic underground hoverboard stage. Nothing new here, as that was thee' stage that haunted many of our childhoods. I need to get this on Cart, so i can get my Bimmy & Jimmy revenge and beat the bits & Zits out of this stinky 'n gnarly TMNT-clone.

A nice list, glad to see that the salt water hasn’t quite gotten to your brain yet. :P I haven’t recently played Adventure Island but would like to give it another crack if it ever comes to Wii U VC. I was horrible at that game as a kid though the chubby island dude doing constant knee lifts always kept tempting me to give it another go. I beat Ghosts ‘n Goblins the first time on the Wii U VC and I may never go back to playing the 2nd time. The game is maddening and the stupid progress map after every death is ridiculous. Castlevania III is tough, I use the HELP ME code though I have the game saved somewhere on the Wii VC and have yet to beat it. I will probably pick it up again around Halloween which is right around the corner. ;) The part in Battletoads that I hate is when you have to race the Mouse guy before he sets off the bomb. The speeder bike level is all memorization and is “easy” after the 1,000th attempt or so.

That game was painful, possibly one of my least favorite NES-experiences, right up there with Karate Kid. poor game design all around with Bart's BS stamp of approval to fool the kiddies into thinking that this game was going to be hotter than aunt patty and Selma! B-) And who could forget Fester's Quest. The only thing going for it is the nutty soundtrack. :p

Bart vs. The Space Mutants was such a huge disappointment. Everybody I knew was looking forward to the Simpson game for the NES. I'm surprised Fester's Quest was so bad. Usually Sunsoft nails their NES games though I guess everyone is allowed a to make a game that is left to just Fester. All I can remember is wandering around with the poop gun and like all Sunsoft games, a decent soundtrack you said.

To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.
I miss Japanese games, the good stuff... Games that are imaginative, have good and unique gameplay, a great soundtrack, and replay value.

Funk this game, and the Silver label Konami horse it road in on! This is officially going on the list of NES-nasties. I honestly don't have the patience for this one, and that's mainly because it's a Schmup, a genre i'm not too craZy over but i thought it would be nice to dive out of my comfort zone and give it a chance. I did and i will never again. Stage 3.....Damn you to Gyromite Hell & bogus battletoads beyond!

RECCA has to be one of them. I cannot get past the 3rd stage (On the 3DS VC).

But looks like a full playthrough is 45mins.

Ghosts n Goblins NES isn't too bad. You can duck without the game automatically adjusting to hit you and the bosses you don't have to hit the exact part.

The true game is the Arcade version.

It changes it completely because you can never stop and duck to get into position and have to be really good on the boss or you run out of time. (Even with a perfect run up to that point).

I never completed any of the missions on Silent Service on NES. Probably not as hard as I remember but it always seemed like the AI cheated to sink me.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

TMNT the furthest I ever got was to the techno dome.
Ghost N Goblins I have gone through at least the first round not sure if I ever went through twice to officially finish the game.
Ninja gaiden 2 is just flat out impossible but a cool game to own.
The hardest NES game I ever finished was Robowarrior I think. Its been a while.

I was this close to making it to the Shredder, but that narrow closed in hallway full of those whacky footsoldiers that would keep reappearing if you moved a trinket off screen ended up doing me in. It's bad enough when your last character is 'Mr.Short reach' Raphael. :P

And try playing through Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient ship of Doom...Not only is it more challenging than the first 2, you have limited continues this time around. ;)

Bart vs the Space Mutants on the NES drove me mad as a child! Glad to see I'm not alone!

I also struggled with TMNT on the NES but I don't think it's considered that difficult universally.
