Well, I can't make a huge list like these, but Little King's Story and Boom Blox Bash Party are the ones that come to mind (I'm basing success off of sales, not reviews).
If I had to think of one, the first one off the top of my head that would still be relatively easy to find it would be Power Rangers: Super Legends for the Nintendo DS. Having played the game through to completion, I know that rereading reviews from major gaming news outlets that no one spent more than half an hour before passing judgment that it was a bad game. It is however, a very fun beat-em up as it really begins to shine once you start unlocking different attacks for characters.
Also I'd add X-Men Origins: Wolverine on the DS for the same reasons I've listed above.
What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.
Rescue Rangers was actually quite popular. Bomberman 64 came with the N64 I bought used. It's actually a great game. Star Fox Adventures sold well, until people realized that it's basically a LOZ clone.
I, for one, actually enjoy the critically panned Star Fox Assault. For one thing, you can actually save after every mission (unlike Star Fox 64). It took awhile for me to realize how awesome Yoshi's Story is. The difficulty settings are hard to understand, since they're different numbered levels (1 = novice, 2 = easy, 3 = medium, 4 = hard).
@2 Fighter's Destiny was pretty well received on N64, I remember. It got a Star Game Award (above 85%) in N64 Magazine here in the UK, at any rate. Great game.
I don't know what the reception was here in the US. I know very few people who have heard of it, but those who have heard of it think it's pretty good.
What is everyone's definition of 'unsuccessful' and 'underrated'? I'm seeing games here that were both successful and/or had great review scores.
I don't pay much attention to review scores, for the most part, but I chose the games I listed because they're either overlooked or underrated. Some of them are more popular than others, but I think all of them deserve more attention than they received.
Wii: These games hit the bargain bin so fast, you wonder if they even tried selling at full price. Grab them while you can, because they are excellent titles. 1. Cursed Mountain - The atmosphere and setting for this survival horror gem are both great. The gameplay won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you have any interest in the genre then it's hard to go wrong given the paltry asking price. Apparently the dev studio has folded after releasing this game. 2. Dawn of Discovery - The name is different in Europe, hopefully sales are better there too. Nobody bought this excellent game, perhaps because of weak box art and the Ubisoft logo? But gamers who overlook this title are missing out on an excellent strategy/sim title! 3. TMNT Smash-Up - Yes, it's disappointing not to have the old cartoon character designs. No, there isn't the nearly infinite amount of content that Smash Bros Brawl offers. But this game is a solid fighter with several entertaining game modes (including solid online play), a great license, and tight controls. As long as you don't carry lofty expectations going in, Smash-Up is a great choice!
[Leaving off Zack & Wiki and MadWorld as my other two favorite unsuccessful titles. Enough has been said about them in the past, but I'm thrilled to own both.]
WiiWare: I bet none of these games sold enough to even get the developers paid. A real shame, since they are all unappreciated gems! 1. Art of Balance - Unfortunately, this game got kind of buried and I don't think anyone bought it. Too bad, because it's really well made and a lot of fun! 2. Bonsai Barber - Ok, honestly this game doesn't have a whole lot to it... but it's also a gem that very few people have even tried. Don't let the kid-friendly appearance turn you away - it's challenging, funny, and designed to be played in short bursts for weeks. 3. Driift Mania - Only good as a multiplayer title, but amazing if you have opponents willing to play. Anyone familiar with the Super Off Road racing games (NES or arcade) of the past will feel right at home, although new controls and game modes keep this game fresh much longer.
Yeah, i agree on Cursed Mountain. That game is criminally overlooked by gamers. The developers shut their offices months ago i'm afraid. The game's only flaw is it's pace, but the atmosphere and originality is priceless. Believe me; this game will be a very very sought-after item in a couple of years!
A Boy and his Blob and Wario Land Shake It scored high 70's on metacritic, but in my book they are easy 9's. Both are really great games. And Elite Beat Agents and Henry Hatsworth on the DS should have gotten more attention, those great games as well.
Oh, yes, that is one very underrated game, imo. I remember having read Corbie's review on his SUPER-NES site back in '08-'09, and it gave me a really good impression (he gave it an 8). It was the first game I ordered from eBay (the SNES original), and I found myself enjoying it. I managed to beat it thrice, I appreciated the level of difficulty. It may just be me, but I find this game harder than Super Ghouls'n Ghosts.
However, I should also note a few other games that I find underrated in this thread:
There's a lot more that I've yet to give mention to.
