Yea I think saying the Genesis became a dust collector once the SNES came out is an ignorant statement. I hope it was meant with sarcasm.
I remember those days very fondly. You were either a Sega kid or a Nintendo kid. Seems few had both consoles back then. I lucked out cause even though I was a Sega kid I still got to play both in their prime. My friend had the SNES and him and I would meet up on the weekends and play both the SNES and Genesis all weekend long.

@Wavesta Mode7 was just a fancy way of saying 'a big flat blocky mess of pixels' and the FX chip didn't even come close to generating polygons like the 'SEGA Virtua Processor Chip' designed by AM1 that was used in 'Virtua Racing' (Genesis) and 'Virtua Racing Deluxe' (32X) this little baby set the foundations and awesomified racing and fighting games beyond the 16bit era and IMO grabbed the FX chip in a cobra clutch then kicked its head into the wall
I had a SNES head friend that always banged on about the FX chip until he played Virtua Racing after that he always tried to borrow my Megadrive for the night... My answer was NO! everytime

Haha... probably not. I have plenty of SNES games to follow up with. Besides, I can only take so much of the underwater sounding muffled chip tunes of the Genesis.
To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.

He points out the Genesis add ons briefly, but not the games for them. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy were better than Phanatsy Star but they weren't better than Lunar. I was accustomed to Squaresoft RPGs the first time I played Lunar and immediately I was like this game is a lot better than what I'm used to.

Well, that's because...

And second, i've only played Phantasy Star IV, but not Lunar though.

Is there any way to play a Japanese Mega Drive game on a US Genesis? I really wanna get Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyo Toistusen someday.
I don't know about Models 1 or 2. But for the Sega Genesis 3...
"In addition, Japanese Mega Drive cartridges (which do not contain an internal region lockout) can be played without a converter or modification, as the cartridge slot, which is the same shape as the original Japanese console, allows for these cartridges to be inserted freely."
@Mickeymac and @Electricmastro
you can play them on the model 3 however id not suggest that because there have been several people who claimed their model 3 stopped working due to japan mega drive games. you can use a game genie on a model 1 and 2 but not a model 3, and if you use a game genie youll need some import codes for it.
yuu yuu hakusho makyou toitsusen codes:
9T9T-BCF8
EE9T-AAGA
BE9T-B98C
RE9T-A60E
BVBT-AA3A
almost forgot, you can play them on the retron3 easily by switching a button on the back of the system that says "J"
or do it the easy way and buy the repro that will play on any system stress free here: http://www.segaage.com/

No contest in my neck of the Wario's Woods. Sure people had the Genesis because it came out first but they soon became dust collectors and paper weights once the SNES arrived. Man, the SNES kills the Genesis in ever way. Oh the Genesis tried to keep up but it in the end it turned into freaky Frankenstein.
