I see what you did there @Emaan
TTYD is one of my favorite games of all time. The music is AMAZING, the bosses have dynamic personalities, (unlike Paper Mario 3DS) the graphics were amazing at the time and it was a REALLY hard game when I was a kid. The mere mention of this game gives me nostalgia. I havent plaid the original but I doubt it will top TTYD as the top 3 games I have ever plaid.
Paper Mario (N64). There is just something that turns me off of the second game compared to the first; I think it was the visual style. The other Paper Mario games try to shove the paper theme down your throat a little too much. The original Paper Mario, except for the characters, wasn't heavy on that, and I think that subtlety served well. An ineresting fact I discovered while reading through an old issue of Nintendo Power was that PM64 recieved a very basic, dry translation while PM TTYD was translated with all of the jokes intact. Even knowing that, I still prefer PM 64 over TTYD, and the first Paper Mario is one of my favorite games ever.
First Paper Mario. While PM:TTYD was my favorite Nintendo game at all that year (and this was when I could still play and afford a lot of games), but that year every game was not quite as good as expected. TTYD is great but the first Paper Mario is one of my favorites. It somehow captures the brilliance of the Mario games and puts it in RPG form. Outside of SMRPG, the other Mario RPGs, while usually great, are closer to unique RPGs that just happen to have lots of Mario stuff in them. TTYD does have an unquestionably better story but the first game is just classic. Also it has a slightly better soundtrack that fits more with Koji Kondo like stuff, which is amazing. I wish I had a more concrete answer but I just know the first game is better.
Also, TTYD had some really badly implemented backtracking.
I love them both, but TTYD gets the edge for me. I thought it had a better plot, more interesting settings, a better (and funnier) localization, slightly better characters, an even more interesting battle system built on top of the first game's already rock solid one and managed to do more with the whole "paper" theme.
I will admit, though, that the first Paper Mario was both a fresher experience when it came out and had better pacing. And the penguin murder mystery might just be my favorite thing in either game.
It basically was an upgrade to the original, and was better in pretty much every way.
Currently playing: Rhythm Heaven, Minecraft (XBLA), Pokemon B/W 2, Halo 4, The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave, Fallblox, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GCN)
Will be playing soon: Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Cave Story +, Wii U: NSMBU, Nintendo Land, (And lots more!)
Darn it, I never can do this because there is always one of the games that I haven't played -_-

Paper Mario is one of my favorite games ever. TTYD didn't leave a mark on me the way the original did but it was still a really good game. Paper Mario gets my vote.

I loved that part. My favorite chapter is probably the Tubba Blubba one though.
