I still need to finish a few Star World levels, or whatever they were, whatever it is after doing the star ones. Secret stages. Some of those were hard

I have a problem, when it says "the end", what am I supposed to do? Also, is it possible to go back to fortresses?
"The End" means it's over. Shut the game off. I remember when I first beat the game back in 1994 and I stared at that screen for twenty minutes and nothing happened.

lol I was like...what now...? I tried pressing every button and combination but nothing took me back to the game. I had no idea if I was going to have to restart all over or not

In truth, SMW wasn't the toughest of Mario games. Sure getting all 96 levels was an achievement, but to get to Bowser wasn't too difficult. Those special stages were something else though, especially that one with the 'P' balloon.
Mario Wold is My Favorite of all the Mario Games. Ive always been very fond of the game and I do think its better that 3, but by a slim margin though. The Frog/Sock Suits on 3 are so much fun as well as the Feather. I still like the level layouts and overworld in Mario World better.

Looks like this has turned into another Mario 3 Vs. Mario World thread, completely missing the point of the original message/question. Oh well.
As for the argument, Mario 3 is superior in overall fun factor, but World feels more epic (if Mario games can be described like that) and varied.

Maybe it's my own nostalgia speaking but I always prefered SMB3 but then again I didn't jump on the SNES bandwagon when I was a kid so I finally played through SMW later on after the hype died down. I did play SMW at a friend's house when it first came out but it wasn't good enough for me to feel like I was missing something by not owning SNES.
There are many things I do like better in SMW but there was just so much I missed from the SMB3 game that it was hard for me to accept it as a better game. Don't take it the wrong way, SMW is a great game and was the perfect title to start the SNES.
I'm always confused about how many exits you have to find to finish the game properly. I currently have found 92 but I've been told it's actually 96 - I'm pretty certain I've finished them all, though. Might have to look into this.
There are 96. You'll know when you get them all, as there are some graphical changes afterward.
Check all the ghost houses. I think one or two may even have three exits? I forget. And check the mysterious forest and star road, as there are some levels that have exits sending you back across a path already revealed.
All levels with a red dot on the world map have 2 exits. The ones with yellow have one. Most Ghost Houses have two as well. This thread is making me want to play me some SMW and SMB3.
the tricky one is that ghost house at the top of the Forest of Illusion map -- it's got two exits, but one of them is the same path that opens up if you get a second exit from the level to the left of it (i think that level has two exits too, lol). good times. And as Adam said, if you were concentrating on opening up the Star Road, don't forget to get the normal exits in all those levels too, because four of them send you straight back to the stars that transported you to Star Road. :3

Jesus so there IS 96? I have no idea which ones they are then. I literally went through it a couple of months ago and finished both exits on all the red stages and all the ghost houses I could find. Every path seems to be open too (even those that just lead in a loop etc. How strange.
yeah, it kinda sucks if you stopped playing in the middle of things and were just jumping around before, because sometimes it's hard to tell which exits you've already opened up. you may want to compare a map of the game online (pretty sure Google Images can turn one up for you) to the map of the game you've got going just to see if there's something super-obvious that should be open or present in your game but isn't.
otherwise, if it were me, i'd just start a new file and play the game straight through without leaving any open exits behind me, lol. that's how i like to play :3

I found eighty-eight, eighty-nine exits by myself; the other seven, eight I did not find myself. I ended up getting all ninety-six exits twice: the first time on the SNES original and the second time on the Game Boy Advance port. The best part of the game is the ending music, imo. SNES Sound Samples > GBA Sound Samples [always].
I'm not going to bother starting over. I have all paths and stages unlocked so I'm finished as far as I'm concerned. If I ever find out which exits I've missed through casual play then bonus - if not then I arn't fussed, I aint got time to go through it all again.
Well Super Mario World definitely get's points for all the hidden secrets and the unified World Map but I loved the variety in Super Mario 3 and how each level set had a distinct theme. I was always fascinated with the Big Land and the Pipe World. The Airships were awesome though the castles weren't half bad in SMW either. Honestly I need to play through both games again because they are classics and it's been quite a few years since I seriously played more than a few levels.
NSMBW follows a lot in the footsteps of Super Mario World though it's definitely not as good a game.
@madgear: lol, i love playing SMW anytime, anyplace, anywhere. usually if i'm sick at home with nothing else to do, i'll load it up and play a few levels (or the rest of whatever unfinished slots i had going, lol). This and SMB3 make perfect sick-day games IMO :3
