I do agree that it was an awkward execution, but I believe the idea was to potentially distribute an unlimited number of levels through these inexpensive card packs at your local stores, sort of like a very early version of DLC. You can delete a level from your cartridge to make room for additional levels, etc. It could have been a great thing, but the awkwardness of using the eReader, the fact that it required 2 GBAs and a link cable, and the poor explanation / advertising certainly killed it.
They really ought to release them all on WiiWare, as Lost Levels 2. I'm sure it would sell quite nicely.
We should all email Nintendo about that idea.

you, sir, are a genius! holy crap I would buy a SMB3:The Lost Levels game so fast, Bowser's head would still be spinning by the time I got to World 8.

Let's get everyone on this site to email Nintendo then. Agreed?

Nice, I hadn't seen that one (and great use of music synching), I've always loved these "automatic Mario" levels. My favorite was one that ended with a battle against King Boo, but I can't find it now.

hey, don't forget about the cape! I still play this with buds just to show off my flyin skills lol! Did anyone else here figure out how to change direction mid-flight? SMB3 had some hard levels (and more levels) but SMW had some controller throwers too (Special World)

@VGP: i love that one. i also love the Kaizo Mario (a.k.a. 'Asshole Mario') videos... those look crazy hard and are pretty hilarious to watch. :3

This may be a little biased because SMW was the first video game that I ever owned, but I do my best to look at things with an open mind. While there might be just a little bit more variety to the different worlds in SMB3 than there is in SMW, Super Mario World is, in my eyes, the perfect game. I've lost count of how many times I've beaten that game and found all 96 exits...the replay value is essentially infinite. I've beaten SMB3 a handful of times, but I never feel that burning desire to beat it all the way through again. Don't get me wrong, both games are in my Top 10 of all-time, but SMW is probably my favorite game ever made (either that or LoZ: OOT).

yeah i probably wouldn't last long either, lol, but i should still give that version a try someday :3

SMB3 was the first game that I bought with 100% of my own money. It's just as good now as it was back then.
SMW, on the other hand, was a game I had to wait to play. (didn't get a SNES for a year or two after the release) It had such a different feel to it than the older Marios, but in mostly positive ways.
In the end, I think SMW wins by the skin of its teeth. Looking back at it, it feels like the first truly 'modern' Mario game. Honestly though, Yoshi's Island ranks almost as highly with me. (despite being easy)
I think I'll go with SMB3 the level design was so much more creative, while still remaining excellently playable. Then you have airships, hammer suits and the angry sun. World didn't even have Hammer Bros., twas still excellent to be sure.
