You know what would be even better than both of those? Super Mario World Rebirth.

I don't know. The actual Rebirth titles seem to be missing something. They're not bad but nothing great either.

New Super Mario Brothers Wii will hopefully scratch that same itch better than a downloadable ever could.

Come on, friends,

the gba versions of these games werent very good, mostly due to the bad sound chip

i didn't mind the GBA versions; what I did mind was that you had to have the e-reader to unlock the extra content. i never had an e-reader, so no extra levels for me.

Not to be picky, but the e-Reader didn't just "unlock" the extra levels (a common misconception); the cards that you scan actually contain all of the level data in the dotcodes. There were a total of 32 new levels distributed through the cards (many of them only in Japan), and, as I've brought up in other threads, they are all fantastic. The best new 2D Mario levels in ages.

Getting your hands on them is complicated... you could get an eReader and the US cards on ebay without too much effort, but the Japanese cards will not play on the US version of the game, so you'd also need the J game in order to play those. There is also the flashcart + savegame-containing-levels method, which is how I played them, but that's hard to get a hold of, and it's against forum rules to discuss / distribute such matters.

You're holding all the necessary items? You'll need 2 GBAs, a link cable, an eReader, the SMA4 game, and one or more level cards (I know, it's overly complicated, which is probably why it didn't catch on). You have to hook the eReader up to one GBA, put the game in the other, link them, go to the appropriate place in the game (e-world) where it will let you scan a level card, then scan it into the eReader when prompted. Once you beat the level once, it will be saved in your game cartridge so that you don't need to scan it again.

though i stand corrected on that point, the bottom line is that the game cartridges themselves did not contain these apparently awesome levels; thus, i still have never had the chance to play them. i wish they'd included them on the cartridge and also a way to actually unlock them instead of going with the e-reader gimmick... surely if the data could be contained on a scannable card, it could've been included on the actual cartridge, right? SMB3, graphics and map updates and all, couldn't possibly have been a big enough game to take up the entire available space on a GBA cartridge...

I do agree that it was an awkward execution, but I believe the idea was to potentially distribute an unlimited number of levels through these inexpensive card packs at your local stores, sort of like a very early version of DLC. You can delete a level from your cartridge to make room for additional levels, etc. It could have been a great thing, but the awkwardness of using the eReader, the fact that it required 2 GBAs and a link cable, and the poor explanation / advertising certainly killed it.

They really ought to release them all on WiiWare, as Lost Levels 2. I'm sure it would sell quite nicely.

Yes i agree. But i still think Nintendo could make a Mario Rebirth that would blow every platformer on Wiiware away. Or like a Mario 4 instead of a remake.

ps noticed what i did on the quote? it kept saying weird adam. I fixed it though

I do have a video; this is my video actually, and I'm playing one of the Japan-only levels (note the mixture of elements from all 2D Mario games, even the plants you can pick up!)
