I think that SMB3 was better than SMW. When I beat SMW, I wasn't satisfied simply because the game was easier than the SMB games. I still haven't beaten SMB3, but I like it a lot more than SMW. I also think SMW was shorter than SMB3.

World, hands down. i've always hated the fact that you can't go back and play through levels you've already beaten again in the pre-SNES mario games. there are so many levels in both games that are extremely memorable, and being able to play those levels anytime i want even after beating them really makes World the quintessential 2-D Mario experience for me.

SMW for me, but the game is still missing something, i just can't point it out.
Any semblance of difficulty prior to Special World? A bunch more levels? It's not a perfect game by any means, but on most days I prefer it to SMB3 (by a hair), too, perhaps due to nostalgia, but definitely also because of being able to replay levels, a wider variety of paths (great for 2P) and secrets, and a more colorful and interesting world. They are neck and neck though, and I hate to choose favorites. World is what I'd go with if some crazed Mario-loving fiend put a gun to my head and forced me to choose for some reason. Of course, I also think the original is about as good as these two, so I really am the worst person to ask which is the best. I just love 2D Mario.
I don't really think there is a correct answer to this one, but I guess SMB 3 left a bigger impact on me than SMW. But to those who have not picked them up on the VC go do it now!
I have to say SMW because I remember playing the levels over and over and over again, until I was so good I could go through every single level without ever getting hurt...which I did

I agree, but I have to say I'm disappointed with the NES version of SMB3 which is on Virtual Console, the conversion is a bit shoddy.
how so? it plays exactly the same as I remember it playing back when i was a kid, graphics oddities, occasional slight slow-downs, and all.

I can never truly be objective on the subject of Super Mario World, as I probably wouldn't be posting on these forums without it. (You can decide whether that's a good or bad thing yourself. ) Too many memories of growing up with that game being my number one. I have to give it quite the edge because, yes, there's lots of nostalgia involved, but also because I truly do believe it's the superior game. Super Mario World will be one of my one true loves until the day I die, and nothing's changing that.
Day I day, Phoenix, seriously? Gah, I know classes just ended, but that gives you no excuse. And I screw up the fix-up. I give this post up.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Part of me always wants to say SMB3, cuz of the awesome power-ups, giant land, and the epic airship battles, but SMW always felt more polished to me, so I'm going with that. I've also beaten it thrice as many times.
SMW but only for the unholy amount of secrets in that game, branching paths, specil world, alternit Yoshi's, a back door to bowers castle, I spent years trying to get 100% on that game.
