Obviously, because of its almost complete difference from the rest of the Mario games, SMB2 has declined to only cult status. However, are there still people who love it?
I still do. Since they apparently made the game a dream, it feels like one. Besides, there have been subsequent Mario games that feel non-canon (Sunshine, e.g.).

I don't think any game with Mario in the title can truly be considered a "cult" classic. It might not be as remembered now, but slews of people bought it when it came out.

Sorry, but, it's just not as fun as.... well... any other game in the main Mario series.
This. But at least it's better than Lost Levels. I like that it's creative, but it's very annoying and unintuitive, which a Mario game should never be.
I know Im going off topic, but thanks. How nice of you.
So yeah, I dont recall Mario games having some sort of continuity, or even making references to previous adventures.. Well obviously, Mario Galaxy has Mario Galaxy 2, but thats about it.
Oh, and Mario RPG's.
In any case, I like both Mario 2's, and Im glad they released Doki Doki Panic version first. I never really bought the explanation that "Original was considered too hard for the western gamers", but rather they switched it because its just the same game, except harder.
I have always enjoyed Mario Bros 2. I remember the summer that it came out my friend and I played that games as much as we could usually at least 8 hours a day. It was the first Mario Bros game that I beat and I liked the fact that it was a bit different than SMB. Honestly I have never heard of anyone hating this game They do however need to bring Wart back either as a minion of Bowser or a cameo or something.

I love it. I have a lot of great memories of playing SMB2 from when it first came out, starting from when i got the first issue of Nintendo Power with its epic clay-style cover, and me and my friends spent hours obseesing about the upcoming release.
As a bizarre thing, i will forever associate SMB2 with the short-lived Muppet-based cereal, Croonchy Stars (google it, kids), which i ate religiously while originally playing the game. The Ninji enemies were and forever will be called Croonchy Stars by me.
Another bizarre thing, much of my SMB2 gaming was done on a black-and-white TV (yep, i'm old), as at that time, my parents let me briefly turn part of our basement into a game room/clubhouse of sorts (probably so we wouldn't mess up the den), complete with a separate phone line and a dial-up modem enabled terminal (waaaay pre-internet, folks! dial-up fees paid BY THE MINUTE!) that i used far too much to play Dungeon (the Zork predecessor) (the phone line and terminal were both actually for my dad's job at the time), and the only spare portable TV was a small B/W (the same TV on which i had a few years before discovered Dr. Who and the ultra-awesome Blake's 7).
Love Super Mario Bros. 2! I don't love any one of the trilogy (US trilogy) more than others, they are all great on their own. I'm glad that Nintendo of America released Doki Doki Panic as Super Mario Bros. 2 because the original Japanese one was more of a challenge edition than a sequel.
It' was like a small break before Super Mario Bros. 3 came and shanked your world.
