Some of the top selling titles these days seem to play it safe a bit too much and rely on trying to be all cinematic instead of the finely tuned gameplay of old that you could play for years and years and still improve. Still, there are definitely innovative titles out there today with quite deep finely tuned gameplay. It all depends on which old games you're playing and which new games you're playing.

I could never make any kind of absolute statement like that since theres always a lot of exceptions out there.

I was thinking this for a while ago, but after the last 2 years saying this is pretty silly. And if you want old school silly innovative gameplay games there's always super indy crap or whatever.

well recently I've gotten into retro gaming and I've found that whille I can easily play snes games for hours on end (more than certain games I currently have) I can't really stand the nes, I'm not saying the games aren't fun to play but they're so hard they make you want thrust yourself out of a window. But I'd take the wii over the nes any day, The snes however I'm not so sure, these games are actually beatable, a long time ago I beat DKC on my advance (of course I also found all the Bombers on my first try ... maybe I'm getting worse at gaming) and it was a very fun and enjoyable game. I might have cried if instead I played a port of contra shudders

I got a sexy deep v-neck and I'm not afraid to use it XD

Nah. People tend to get overly nostalgic about the games from the 80's and 90's, but have you ever really dug through the NES library (for an example)? Sure, you'll find plenty of unique, quirky titles and gems but for each one of those you'll find 10 terrible, derivative junk titles. That seems to be the same ratio you'll find on the current systems, isn't it?

Some are driven by businesses now that were just starting out...but in turn, the smaller developers will start to become noticed through their innovation.

Everyone states that Atlus has a cult fanbase...but I see almost everyone here at least knows of them or have played their games...in time...their business will grow thanks to you guys, and that can be a good thing if they maintain their innovation and ideas through their creativity....this is how Capcom and pretty much all developers have grown.

As for older games being better then newer games...it all depends on taste and time. Older games take less time to finish...but they are also simpler in plot and requirements...most of us here grew up playing these to death and enjoying the experience but a few feel like the newer games are more fleshed out and more complex in plot...so it differs between every gamer.

Atlus is sorta big in Japan, actually, and you're right the western fanbase is growing. Though juding by the low amount of members in the Atlus Fan Club, they still have a ways to go before they become big, at least among Nintendo Fans (for shame, too, since they've released some great games on the DS).

I am sure there are closet Atlus fans out there...a talented team can't hide forever.

If you find yourself saying that statement too many times, it means you're getting old.

Technologically games have gotten better. We can do things in games that we probably couldnt dream of in the 80's (or definitely not in the arcades). Smaller games havent been forgotten either, thanks to download services.

Yeah, I still don't get why Atlus brought that over. However, Atlus was only the distributer. The developer, Takara Tomy, is the one you should have a grudge against. They were the one who made that awful game.

Many games we used to love are seen as either ugly or not as great as we remember, but only a few games stick out as truly amazing, no wonder we get compilation games sometimes.

With that said, on to the main topic subject. There are just as many high-quality games today as there were back in the Golden Age of Videogames. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Cave Story [proof that indie games can be just as awesome as non-indie games, or even better], the Kingdom Hearts series, the Grand Theft Auto series, the Fallout series, and countless other games have just as much or more quality today as does the classics in the past.

There was also just as much cash-ins and shovelware in the 80's and 90's as well as today, Superman 64 and Custer's Revenge are prime examples.

Pretty sure everyone's agreed that there was both awesomeness and crap back in the day, same as there's both awesomeness and crap available now. Time to put this to rest. :3
