Ciao, Moe Musashi here, with another thoughtbox. Today's game is very little known, and quite underrated: Sonic The Fighters for the arcade. [disappears in the mists after having spat the smoke bomb to the ground] The game is, indeed, a one on one fighter, with a twist. It's a 3D fighter on a 3D plane, starring our favorite characters from Sega. The object of game is to collect all the Chaos Emeralds and do away with Dr. Robotnik's Death Egg II. You take control of one of eight characters; including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, and more. The animation is quite superb for being one of Sonic's true first 3D titles, and at few times a bit over the top. The game may remind some of Virtua Fighter Kids because of how small the characters are, but this game's got style and tons of quality. Attacks vary depending on the one you take control of, and it's so fun to execute your commands and special attacks. It's a G-rated type fighting game with wacky animations. The soundtrack in each stage is very catchy, and the controls can be quite intuitive at times. The game may start outevery easy at first, but then the difficulty turns on you. The graphics look quite great for 1996, but by today's standards, looks quite blocky. I also dig the lighting and the shading in the characters. In short, Sonic The Fighters is a very decent fighter that's fun to play every once in awhile. And it's one title I recommend to fighter or Sonic fans [via Sonic Gems Collection]. Peace! [why does this feel a bit rushed compared to my other thoughtboxes? ]
I do feel Sonic the Fighters is a decent game, truly I do. But I feel I could've said more and expressed more. This thoughtbox feels very rushed, and I wanted to share how I felt about one Sonic game so much.
@Odnetnin - Compared to the big dogs like Virtua Fighter 2 and Tekken 3, others might say this game is inferior compared to those two I named. Wow, that was pretty self-explanatory and blatant of me to say. :/
Good fun in 2 player mode, obviously doesn't have the depth of a VF game, but then it is a Sonic Fighter so I wouldn't expect it to, a bit dated now, wouldn't mind seeing an update though.
@StarFox, why sell Gems Collections when it also has Sonic the Fighters and Sonic CD on it. Also, Sonic the Fighters does start out easy, but it gets harder, and Metal Sonic is incredibly hard with really cheap attacks. It usually takes me at least a dozen continues before I can beat Metal Sonic.
I really like Sonic the Fighters. It even beats out Sonic CD for my favorite game on Sonic Gems Collection.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I always liked Sonic the Fighters. Quite a deep, yet intuitive fighting game, it was. Had some serious balancing issues, but it was still tons of fun. I never beat it with the true ending yet, I outta do that sometime.
@BulbasaurusRex - That's funny: last I played, I beat Metal Sonic without losing a continue. Must be either my practice (yeah, right) or the fact that I kept pushing the same one button to beat him. Ah, well. It's still fun while it lasts.
@Bulbasaurus: Sonic the Fighters is a ridiculous looking fighter which almost resembles Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. Sonic CD is just a remixed Sonic sidescroller, with some 3D aspects. The only thing I ever really play is Sonic R.

The controls are a bit sensitive in Sonic R. It's also annoying when you get stuck in a corner. It's too reliant on walking backwards rather than actually turning left or right.
