Wait, seriously? It's not in production anymore? Good thing I got my copy not too long ago. ;P
Honestly, I enjoyed it very much. It's probably the best HD kart racer currently out there (I have the PS3 version). ModNation can't hold a candle to it, gameplay-wise, and it's almost as good as Mario Kart. But not quite there.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I got it on Xbox 360 and I think it was a half decent blatant rip-off of Mario Kart. I would recommend it. Both have advantages. All Star racing I feel lacks a bit of the charm and it didn't have the same replayability with me however there were no blue shells which is a bonus. It felt a bit easy.
Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing is no Burnout Revenge but it's as good as Mario Kart Wii. I have read it's best on Xbox and PS3 though (since it's not as skippy when you play split screen). For that reason I'd say Mario Kart is the slightly superior racer. Mario doesn't push the Wii hardware further than it should. I still bought Sonic and Sega Racing after trying them both out. I feel that Mario Kart hasn't changed much. Whereas; Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing is surprisingly fresh due to newer tracks, less familiar racers, all star moves, Sega miles, a lower price point, and it's not almost 3 years old. So overall, a much better value.
I like the sense of speed in SEGA, its a shame that there arn't as many stand-out tracks in SEGA than there is in Mario Kart. But I still enjoyed it nonetheless.
QUEEN OF SASS
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

You're kidding, right? I mean...I have played the Mario Kart series to say that although the tracks are original and fresh, there is nothing behind them to feel like they are genuine "speed race" tracks, they are colourful and robust like ASR, but the difference is that many SEGA fans recall these race tracks in the games level form...they are both great games...but I feel that ASR are more bigger in scale and really well designed...the thing I do hate is the fact that they based a group of tracks on a few selected franchises...
As for the answer to the discontinuation...they did so on the FIRST WEEK OF RELEASE, the reason was solely the reputation of Sonic (at the time), SEGA assumed only about a million would sell...so they stopped production as they thought it wouldn't sell...the main forums even caused outcry as it sold better then expected.
Anyways, hoping for a sequel for sure...they were great in the roster...although not varied in track design...they can improve that as it was well regarded.

I have to agree. This game has awsome graphics and can hold its own. The tracks are well designed too. It felt like Mario Kart in a lot of ways. The only reason why I don't feel the charm with this one is due to playing the SNES and not the Genesis during the console wars.
I was impressed by the XBox 360 version as well because they added some of the little touched that you don't always think about. The control scheme was the first thing I noticed. They gave the option of using the triggers for gas like other racers on the 360 but they also gave the option of tradition Mario Kart controls where A is gas and the triggers were drift.

Any kart fan should play this game.
Fair enough about the console wars part (although living in England they didn't exist due to the Mega Drive dominance. XD).
Me (as well as a few others in the SEGA Forums) have talked to SUMO Digital about the games development and we were told quite a few interesting info about the game as it was being made...such as the FInal Fortress stages were supposed to have laser gates in and Metal Sonic (before becoming DLC) was supposed to cameo on the stages....
I think one Wii feature was taken out too (something to do with Mii Colours for a car? it was something like that) and Mario was considered for the Wii version.
So most of the things in the game like controls were considered by Nintendo Wii owners within the forums.
At the time we were hoping for more DLC but the response was "If the sales are good, we'll be given permission by SEGA" but it seemed like it wasn't meant to be (it didn't help when some members complained about the price too), so overall...it's a very decent karting game, but it didn't sell as well as expected.
*Oh and there was a list of over 50 SEGA characters considered during the development.
If the Wii version had Mario I would have bought it but The Xbox version has HD, Banjo Kazooie and dlc. To me it made sense. That and it is fun racing a forklift.
Jesus - since when is a new game released just this year considered retro? Still in production or not, I wouldn't class any game this generation retro yet.
Anyway I really like the game but have barely played it. I mostly bought it because I'm a bit of a Sega fan and it has Ryo Hazuki in it. I'll put some time into it in the new year but so far so good.
Retro should be defined as "any game from a now-discontinued console".
NINTENDO RETRO Game Boy Advance/SP GameCube Nintendo 64 Game Boy Color Virtual Boy Game Boy/Pocket Super Nintendo Entertainment System Nintendo Entertainment System
SEGA RETRO Sega Dreamcast Sega Nomad Sega Saturn Sega Game Gear Sega Genesis Sega Master System

The past can be classed as a few moments ago. I know this isn't on a "Retro Console", but if you have experienced a game and have a feeling of nostalgia towards it (no matter how recent), that's considered retro. Besides, the 3DS will be out shortly, so the DS version will be soon considered "retro".
Anyway, the Forklift pre-order DLC was great, but they should have enabled players to have both available.
Yeah well you're talking about nostalgia and sentiment there, which can be applied to recent events. No one will say anything from a few months ago is retro - especially not within the same year ... unless you're a goldfish. Also when the 3DS is released, the DS wont automatically become a retro machine because it'll still be in wide use for a while.
You can also still buy it at Tesco and they only stock the latest games: http://www.tescoentertainment.com/store/games/sonic--sega-allstars-racing(with-wheel)/8%3A676903/
I don't care where your thread is located or anything, just don't label something retro when it's not because, next thing you know, you'll get kids saying how retro Justin Beiber is this year!
Maybe this thread should be moved to General Discussion since it is not Retro nor an exclusive. Then we can either remove or lock it in the retro category. Can we agree with that?
nah I reckon it's fine here - we don't need to be too picky about where things need to be placed (yes, I know, me of all people saying that) - guess just as long as every new release doesn't pop up in here a few month after release in future lol.
Oh and to keep things on topic - gave it a go the other night and realised it doesn't have GameCube pad support. Quite disappointed by that since I only have one Wii remote and means no multiplayer for me for a while. Can't believe they made that decision.
I wasn't too impressed with Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing, I looked forward to it prior to its release, but it seemed to lack polish and originality to make it stand out. Many of the tracks were poorly designed with a few exceptions, but nothing really stood out (except maybe for that one psychedelic Samba track.)
