Who won the war actually. Some say the SNES beat it while others say that Genesis won. So who really won that gen? SEGA or Nintendo?

Depends where in the world you live! I believe the Mega Drive did better in the UK and Europe, while the SNES did far better in the US.

Of course, both are still some of the best consoles ever made, so either way it doesn't matter!

SNES won as Nintendo clearly was the dominant force in video games going into the 5th gen... then they screw big time with the N64 and things would never be the same

@LeeGarbutt I'm curious about Genesis because there's no confirmation on how much of units it sold.....And that made me wonder how that system can be so close to beating SNES despite it being underpowered?

I live in the UK, and I only knew one person who ever had a genasis/mega drive. The rest of my gamer friends had Super Nintendo's.
I just didn't like the games that were on the Sega quite as much as what Nintendo was being offered.

Who cares who won?

Play games to enjoy them. Not to participate in this stupid popularity contest.

SNES won, SNES won nine times!

But @Aviator made a good point, it doesn't really matter. Even though I like the SNES way better than the Genesis, that didn't stop me from buying one and putting it in my room. (Still need a Nintendo System for my room though) Buuuuut on the other hand, there's no reason why we can't talk about which is our favorite and which we think "won". but we all know it was the SNES

They both have their own fun games. Genesis had games like Sonic, Vectorman, Dynamite Heady, and Ristar. SNES had games like Super Mario World, Kirby Super Star, F-Zero, and Donkey Kong Country. So really, they both win. Then again SNES had Earthbound, so...

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

Depends how you call it underpowered. The Genesis had a considerably faster processor than SNES but SNES was better in other areas. But the sound chip is all matter of opinion. I like the Genesis sound better on some games and SNES on some. The Genesis chip is still the one being used today by musicians so it has lasted the test of time better.

If we are talking pure sales than that can be some speculation to a degree. It is usually widely considered Genesis had the global lead till late in console generation when Sega started to war heavily internally and lost North America.

But really at the end of the day, who cares? They both had great games. Both defined an era. Both defined us as individuals to a extent.

Personal opinion though I prefer the Genesis.

They weren't though.

The cutting edge at that time was the Arcades.

Home Consoles were what people had Arcade games were what people wanted. (Reason why the Neo Geo was so desirable).

If you look at the Arcade games Sega had in that time period they were miles ahead. (e.g Daytona USA)

It's weird how in Japan, the SNES sold better than the Genesis, while the N64 sold less than the Saturn

Not really the PC Engine wasn't restricted by NoA policies (Put it on the NES you cannot put it on anything else). And it had the best versions of loads of NES / Arcade games.

The Saturn if what you wanted was the Arcade experience at home was the best. (Certainly between PS1/N64/Saturn).

I owned a Genesis and SNES as a kid,......and I think by 1994, the Genesis was slowly dwindling, while the SNES received a big boost with Donkey Kong Country, which was all the rage at the time.....I'm guessing the reason that the SNES ultimately won was because it received solid support during its second half, it was still selling admirably into 1996.

Still have great memories of both systems though.

I know I'm gonna probably get killed for this, but I still say Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trumps Super Mario World (although SMW is superior to the original Sonic).
