Odd that Nintendo valued more how the system looks without controllers plugged into the system, than trying to match the appearance of the original with controllers plugged into the system (i.e., how it's actually setup in our homes...).
I'd rather of seen exposed Classic Controller ports than what appears to potentially be a fragile cover that looks odd when opened with a controller plugged in.
Saw a pic on Twitter, looks like it's gonna be actual SNES ports.
I know that the truth has already been confirmed, but it was never going to be this.
Ignoring the confirmation from the start of Classic Controller support, we've already seen the system being held in someone's hand. So we know roughly how tiny it is.
Yet the "original" controller port replicas are in scale with the rest system, so it obviously was never going to be actual SuperNes connectors here. If they were originals, they'd dominate the front of this small system since they'd be well out of proportion with the rest of it.
For the price of one of these Club Nintendo controllers on Ebay, I'll not only get the SNES Mini but also two of same style controllers that can be used with Virtual Console downloads and various other Wii/Wii U games. So I'm very glad I never hit the buy button now.
I thought we might see USB connections so that these would be Switch compatible, so I'm very pleased that it worked out in my favor. By sticking with this controller standard, it also gives me hope that my Classic Controller collection might even be Switch compatible by the time I make that leap, such as via a USB hub like the Wii U got for GCN controllers.
@GoneFishin I stored up my points for club nintendo, even bought codes off ebay so that i could get that controller and now they are giving out two with the new console. I feel cheated.
Also to be fair, not really interested in this as the only game i would like to play is Starfox 2, and i still have my original SNES console.
The real draw for me here is that it has 3 SNES games that have never been released on Virtual Console: Starfox 1 & 2 and Yoshi's Island. Can someone open the SNES mini to check for the FX Chip?
The compilation of games is fantastic.
13 Nintendo classics, 3 Square Enix RPG's, 3 Capcom action games, and 2 of Konami's most beloved.
And the controllers work with Wii and Wii U but not with the Switch??
Tetris Attack would have been fantastic, as would Super Bomberman although they'd have had to include more controller ports for that. I think that Super Soccer and Super Tennis would also have been perfect fits. Regardless - it's an all star line-up. I think there must be 5 of my personal current top 20 games of all time on there (I loved the NES mini but I'm not sure it has a single one that still sits in my top 20).
Anyone else think it's a little odd that we, in Europe, are getting:
FF3 (VI) - never released on the SNES in Europe
Earthbound - never released on the SNES in Europe
Super Mario RPG - never released on the SNES in Europe
On top of StarFox 2 (which was never released anywhere) that's almost 20% of the games on this thing that never came out here "back in the day".
I'm not complaining because they're all incredible games but I find it a little odd, especially since it's a nostalgia device and most people in Europe have no nostalgia for those games.
The omission of Super Tennis and Super Soccer in favour of RPGs that we never got (but that Nintendo fans all love) perhaps says something about who this is not for. Unlike the NES mini with OK ports of Donkey Kong, Pac Man and Galaga there's no pretence that this is for a casual audience who might pick it up on a whim.
I knew the games would be 60Hz but didn't know that they're the American games. I guess it makes sense but what about the other European languages? We knew about the AC adapter but it is an annoyance none the less.
@StuTwo I know Final Fantasy 1 on the NES Mini was also not originally released in Europe. I can't remember if River City Ransom was on the NES Mini but I know that was originally released in EU under a different name (the more generic-sounding "Street Gangs") but if that was on NES Mini, not sure which version was there. Also, I assume Tecmo Bowl, while a popular game in the US was not in Europe (or really anywhere but America).
I wonder if StarFox on the PAL console will keep its name or be reverted to its original PAL title, Starwing? (and also is it going to play at the correct speed or at the "turbo" speed common in emulators?)
I do recall reading Super Mario RPG had at least one if not more minor text changes on PAL VC releases due to differences between US and UK English.
Don't recall reports of the other two RPGs needing any other edits.
