NES: Very hard to figure out, like most NES games. if you were born an NES gamer, then it should be moderately hard.
Super Metroid: A little easier than the NES one, but still pretty hard.
Metroid Fusion: The first Metroid game I played. kinda like the others, but very easy (compared to other Metroid games) since it tells you where to go. I recommend it for newcomers to the series.
Metroid Prime: Once you start, you never stop. Right amount of challenge, back-story, and boss battles to satisfy any gamer. This game basically hooked me to the Metroid series.
Metroid Prime 2: Balls-to-The-Wall hard. Probably the hardest Metroid game besides the NES game.

NES Metroid is a pretty poor game nowadays. Super Metroid is good, but with absolutely no hinting system and a pretty vast map, it can be hard to remember exactly where you're supposed to go back to now that you have X item. So you can spend a lot of time traipsing back and forth to hunt down that small side-room you encountered 3 hours ago. And the bosses are incredibly hard. But otherwise it's a brilliant game.
If you have the money, get Metroid Prime Trilogy. The Primes - all 3 of them - are for me, the pinnacle of the series. I really look forward to finding out what Retro Studios are working on next. Or, if you can find it, Fusion is excellent too. Haven't played Zero Mission though. Being a remake of NES Metroid, I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

Well i started with the Prime series so my pick is get Metroid Prime Trilogy as for Super Metroid and Metroid on the VC i'll admit Super Metroid is as great as everyone said it is it's not only my favorite Metroid game but also one of my personal favorite Platform / Side Scrolling games.
If you want to spend 20+ minutes grinding your energy back to full every time you die (you respawn with 30 energy out of a possible... 799? And the grinding enemies only drop 10-energy pellets), then get the original Metroid. Otherwise get Super Metroid.
No, "you will should not get Metroid." Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo is infinitely better and remains one of the best adventure games ever made.

The clue is in the name, lots of games for this console had super in the title, as also in a later generation a lot of games had 64 in the title, as in a later generation lots of games had Wii in the title, see the trend ???
I am realy into the original NES Metroid, but it takes a lot of practise and patience to be good at it. It is still great, if you put in the perspective of 1986
For a start, while knowing all the Metroid games, I recommend you Metroid: Zero Mission or Metroid Fusion - the two GBA games. Zero Mission is a modernized and advanced version of the NES original and will teach you every basics you will need to know. Fusion also begins with "nothing", is harder, but better and you will feel less disorientated like in other Metroid games like Super Metroid or Prime 2.
Super Metroid is great, yes, but could be too much for a beginner.
So: Zero Mission or Metroid Fusion -> Super Metroid -> Metroid Prime. Then you should know if you want to play the other 3D games or replay the more classic ones.
