Hi. I know most of you guys have played most of these classic consoles, but, well, i haven't (just N64, gamecube and gameboy),so, i am thinking of buying a new one, like Super Nintendo, NES, or anything else, but i am not really sure which one. I have heard some saying i should buy Retro Duo (plays both NES and SNES games). Well, it's not an official Nintendo console, but i don't really care. I don't have a problem with the price of any of those, but a used one means more games, right?.Anyway, post your replies.

I would say go for the one that plays both SNES and NES games. Best of both worlds!

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

The Retro Duo is rather pointless, really, and you're never guaranteed it will play every game you buy perfectly (or at all, even). Why not just buy an original NES and SNES instead, they're better in every way, and it's not like they're expensive.

I do not agree with Adamant. If you want more info - here is a NES/SNES combo I can attest to. I do not have one, but my brother Chet does:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Twin

The compatibility issues are pretty small, in my humble opinion....here is a list of those that DO NOT WORK according to general public :

As tested by consumers, the following NES games are not compatible with the FC Twin:

NES
"After Burner"
"Battletoads" (the game hangs at the second level, however, if warps are used, this is passable and the rest of the game works perfect)
Captain Planet and the Planeteers
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (works on FC Dual and Retro Duo System)
Cheetahmen II
Challenge of the Dragon
Crystal Mines
Dragon Warrior II
Ducktales (Game works, but won't respond to the B button)
Gemfire
Laser Invasion
L'Empereur
Paperboy
Pipe Dream
Mad Max
The Krion Conquest
Uncharted Waters
Gauntlet (Tengen version)

SNES
BatterUP
Street Fighter Alpha 2 - The S-DD1 chip does not function. (Disputed.) (Compatible with Retro Duo system)
Star Ocean - Another S-DD1 dependent title.
Kirby Super Star - Due to Nintendo SA-1 Coprocessor built (disputed) into the Cartridge (Compatible with Retro Duo system)
Kirby's Dreamland 3 - Another title with the Nintendo SA-1 chip (disputed)
Super Scope 6 - Gun will work but you can not use controller it wont let two player mode work on Terminator: Arcade, Metal Combat, etc.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts - Everything works up until the 3rd level boss which is incorrectly invisible.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - Due to Nintendo SA-1 Coprocessor built (disputed) into the Cartridge
Dragon_Quest I & II - Another title that doesn't work with the FC Twin, may possibly be related to the same reasons that Dragon Warrior 2 for the NES doesn't work
Doraemon - Nobita to Yosei no Kuni - The over world map doesn't appear, just the sprites appear.
Dragon_Quest III
Terranigma - The game has a special lockout chip which prevents use on famiclones

Buy the FC Twin. It allows you to play BOTH NES and SNES games!

Yes what SuperSonic said, but it's ALSO compatible with games for both those consoles from ANY region!!

Not enough love here for the original systems! Your far better off getting the actual consoles. The Retro Duo may be convenient, but if it won't play every game 100% accurately than its not worth it when NES and SNES are so easily available. The fact that it only supports SNES compatible controllers and is a huge negative to me. I think it would be awkward to play NES games with the buttons "angled" on a SNES pad. Ain't nothing like the real thing baby.

Please don't buy a Retro Duo or any of the SNEs clones. I've reviewed them all and they're all garbage. The NES slots are so loose that your NES carts will rock back and forth with the slightest of movement from the controller and cause them to freeze. I also had trouble with some games saving and others wouldn't play at all. Get the real deal. End of story.

I took my Famicom Twin and my Retro Duo and tossed them into the garbage. Didn't even feel like pawning them off on someone else.

I would rather free fall onto hot asphalt from an airplane naked while getting shot at then own any of those clones. Authenticity is the best.

I've never had anything third party that's lasted more than a year. However, I still have an SNES and a Game boy color that still kinda work like new!

I have a Gameboy Color with Pokemon Red, the rare Yellow (I assume), Crystal and DKC. But I want to play all these retro games that are being reviewed. But it still has to be shipped from Mexico. That is the only "retro" console I own. And Im just happy its authentic. But Im just fine with the VC as it is First Party.

I'm with Corbie here: Do NOT get any of those clones. For one, it doesn't play every game. Also, you can only use SNES controllers, even with NES games, and the controllers that come with the FC Twin suck balls. Not all controllers work with it either. My friend has a FC Twin and we bought a new controller which doesn't work, so we're stuck with the crappy knock-offs that came with the system. DO NOT buy a third party knockoff.

UPDATE : Or should i just spend all the money i would spend on Ebay for the shipping taxes and the system and the games on buying those games via VC on my Wii?

The problem with Corbies argument is you will have worse problems with an orignal NES.....the clones work better for $30 and you have SNES carts slot as well...

I guess you really have to look in to what games you want to play. I mean is there a lot of NES or SUper Nes games you can't wait to dive into? Sometimes those rare cartridges can cost a bit on Ebay, but majority of them are pretty low priced. Which everyone has more games you want or the games seem cheaper, then go for it. There are instructions on the web as to how to properly clean the NES's "PINS" to make sure the contacts are free from debris and the games slide in and boot up great. The Super Nes doesn't seem to have that problem though.

This is the Generation NEX console. It was designed to rid of the load up problems and the flickering when you try to load a game. I believe the contact pins are stronger. It is for the NES. I've read a few good things about it. Good Luck
