That's great news about your Saturn working, and you're right - what a line-up! I nearly sold Guardian Heroes last year but my brother convinced me not to. Still not sure it's as brilliant as some say but the multiplayer is ace: I have a multitap and that's one game that always gets use out of it.

I only really got into the original Shining Force long after I loved the other two: it was the Resurrection of the Dark Dragon remake for GBA that convinced me it was on par with the other two. I should probably look into reviewing all the Shining games for Nintendo formats one day...

I had no idea there were so many Shining Force games. This thread has been a very educational. I didn't like the original, but I enjoyed SF2 quite a bit. Is the GBA remake a significant update? I might have to look into that.

That's a good idea - don't forget you also have Shining in the Darkness too, which is linked to the series.

I think the only thing that really puts me off the original Shining Force is most of the locations are similar and there's not much graphical variety. The sequel is a great improvement in this area but if you can get past the graphics, the original is pretty good. I'm a bit gutted I've never been able to play Shining Force CD - I've tried tracking it down a few times but it's not easy to get hold of (at least not at a reasonable price).

Have you heard of Shining Force Neo? It's for the PS2 but they've ditched the classic battle system so it's probably best avoid (well for me anyway).

It introduces brand new characters, a totally new side story, new graphics and some other slight updates too. To me, even as a huge SF fan, I find the original somewhat hard to get into so I'd certainly say give the GBA version a go.

I'm also keen to try SFCD but it's got no towns, which is disappointing as some of my favourite SF moments have come in towns. That said, my least favourite SF moment was getting stuck in Flagard for three days as I didn't know you could go up the steps to talk to the priest

I haven't played Neo but I loved Shining Soul II, so it might be worth checking out for me, though I hear Shining Tears is a little better. Damning with faint praise though I think!

Too bad there's no Sega CD on VC. That's something I'd like to try, too. But thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to track down the GBA remake.

And thanks for the reminder, Madgear -- I'd forgotten about Shining in the Darkness. I have to say, it doesn't look good and the NL review didn't make it sound better, but in the absence of other Shining options, I'll probably give it a shot anyway.

Tell me about it - it's a ridiculously high price. A lot of these old games really seem to be going for a lot these days - I wonder why. I bought some rare games from ebay quite a few years ago (including an almost mint copy of Snatcher for £25) and the prices were all reasonable. I look for something now and they go for over £100 in a lot of cases (especially Panzer Dragoon Saga - as amazing at it is, I couldn't part with £100 for it). Seems a recent thing really.

As for Shining in the Darkness - I can't really say I'm a massive fan. The same goes for Shining The Holy Ark on the Saturn. They're linked to the Shining Force games but don't share the same battle system - and it's the battle system that really sells Shining Force for me. The first person side of things is also not that great.

Speaking of battle systems, it's occurred to me that I haven't really played an RPG with a good battle system since the first two RPGs I ever played - being Shining Force 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga. They're the only cases of RPGs I've played where the battles have to be planned strategically and you can't win by just closing your eyes and pressing "attack" over and over. I enjoyed Grandia 2 I suppose but every other RPG I've played since has left me extremely bored.

Skies of Arcadia has quite a good battle system, as does Valkyria Chronicles from what I've heard, but my favourite RPG battle system in recent times was actually on the DS - Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is absolutely ace and well worth a look!

I remember about ten years ago I saw Shining Force CD on Ebay for like 20 bucks. For whatever reason I did not buy it, but I certainly regret not buying it when I had the chance

Landstalker on WII is made by most of the same developers. It has the same kind of feel in the towns and same fonts for text boxes. Also the same kind of humour and sega charm.

Has a massive world to explore as well.

Obviously it doesnt have the turn based combat system but it is very close.

And it has very similar music as well. At first I got excited and thought "they're doing Landstalker for Wii?!" before I realised you meant Virtual Console!

Landstalker's like SF with a Zelda "battle system" and more platforming, I suppose. Decent game though!

Ooh actually I've been thinking of buying Landstalker. I remember I used to want it when it was originally released - was a 16 meg cart wasn't it? Remember thinking it must be epic at the time but never got round to getting it back then (mostly because games were so bloody expensive and had to rely on pocket money).

I think I'll have to try emulating it before I buy it to see what it's like first. I think it also got a sequel on the Saturn actually.

It got a semi-sequel but I've never played it, though this thread has reminded me I need to add it to my Saturn collection so I'm eBaying it as we speak There was also a Dreamcast follow-up to that called Time Stalkers that features characters from Shining in the Darkness and Landstalker's hero Nigel! Pretty rare but might be worth grabbing after the other two.

Yeah Dark Saviour on the saturn as well is good. That one veers more towards action game roots even further and can be completed in 4 hours. Landstalker will take 20.

Dark Saviour is a good game though. Please listen to this music 2.08 in.

Amazing game still!!!!!
