The Legend of Zelda- if my first game had been A Link to the Past, I'd have been hooked. Since the original game is nonlinear and has you wandering aimlessly trying to find the next dungeon, I didn't like it much.

I forgot Wario and Kirby.

Wario- my first game was Master of Disguise. That game sucked badly. Good thing Shake It turned out to be fun or else I'd have given up.

Kirby- Squeak Squad is terrible. I tried again with Kirby 64, which has proven to be a fun game. Super Star Ultra absolutely sucks, so it's a good thing I chose Dream Land 3 instead of waiting for KSS. Dream Land 3 is far superior.

Burnout: I originally played the 3 rd installment (Burnout 3: Takedown), which lead me to only liking that game.

EDIT: I messed up on the title of Burnout 3 and I corrected it.

Same. The rest just pale in comparison.

I dunno. Most series I've entered into I've entered with one of the better games in the series.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

Actually, the third game is Burnout 3. I know what you mean, though. I started with Burnout 3, and the rest just weren't as fun.

Also: The Super Mario Series - I started with Super Mario 64(didn't know what to do) and Super Mario Advance(Hated it to death), which put me off the series until recently.

Fire Emblem - The GBA game had way too many tutorials for gameplay I pretty easily understood.

Elder Scrolls - Normally it's a good idea to start a series from the beginning. Not in this case. I urge everyone whom may be interested in the series to skip it. Skip it and go on to Daggerfall, or Morrowind, or Oblivion. All of them are so much better.

Fallout - Maybe if I hadn't have played the 3rd game first, I would've liked the other ones?

Shin Megami Tensei - Technically, I first became aware of the series with Persona 3, which was not a game I could ever get into, both story and gameplay-wise. I then used that as an excuse to ignore the rest of the series. Thankfully, I eventually broke down and played the original Shin Megami Tensei, which hooked me to the series. Still I'm restricting myself to the main series games, and only playing the spin-offs that are more like the main series games, such as Devil Survivor, or games whose concepts are intriguing enough to warrent overlooking any possible gameplay deficiencies, such as Persona 4 or Devil Summoner.

Devil May Cry - I started with the best(DMC3), and now the rest are nigh unplayable.

Mega Man - I started with Mega Man 64, not knowing it was a spin-off. I later got Mega Man X5 and hated it, but knew it was a spin-off. I later got the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, and hated it because it wasn't like Mega Man 64, and was more like Mega Man X5. Thankfully, after a while I finally got to like Mega Man, and it became one of my favorite series, but it was a long, arduous process.

Jak & Daxter - I started with Jak II. I figued "They all play the same, I don't need to start with #1 or #3". Jak II was awful. Indescribably awful. Took me years before I picked up J&D1, and fell in love with the series. Had I simply started with 1, I would've loved it sooner.

Gunstar Heroes - I started with Super Gunstar Heroes, and now I can't enjoy the original.

While I'm sure there's a few more, I'm happy that I've started off on the right foot with most of the series that I've enjoyed.

@Mickeymac I'll fix the name screw-up. I seem to be screwing up a lot today for some reason.

The Playstation games.

Good grief, was it horrible the first time.

Star Fox- my first game was Adventures, and I knew from the start that it wasn't a regular Star Fox game. I eventually sold it and got Assault. Much better. I've since gotten Star Fox 64, Star Fox Command, and the original Star Fox.

@Mickeymac It sounds like you'll like SMT III: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga and Persona 2. Those are a lot more mature than Persona 3/4. (Although P3F probably remains my favourite in the series.) If you're unsure about Persona 2, just watch the Innocent Sin intro... I think that'll prove to you how much the series changed with P3.

The only major game series I've notably not "gotten in to" are Metroid and Zelda. I never had any of them on the NES. I've also yet to find one of them that really grabs me. I think I might like Super Metroid though.

I played the original first as well. Hated the hell out of it (still do). Put me off Metroid for a good while, but some time ago (2006, maybe?) I played Metroid Prime, then went on to play the other 2, then Super Metroid, and then got MPT and decided Metroid was one of my top 5 favorite series.

Actually, Persona 2 is my favorite out of the spin-offs so far. I love the story so far, and the negotiations are a lot more fun and involve less trial & error than in the other SMT games, though admittedly they aren't as rewarding. The battles aren't as fun or interesting as the other SMT games I've played, but they're at least tolerable and fairly balanced.

I also already have SMT: Nocturne(first SMT game I bought), though I've yet to play it. Digital Devil Saga doesn't interest me much, but I'll probably get it anyways. Also, I replayed Persona 3 recently, and I enjoyed it a lot more this time around. It still wasn't great by any means, but its faults were a lot more tolerable than before.

Off-topic: Which Burnout game is best to start out, I was thinking Paradise but I'm not sure.

On-topic: Final Fantasy. They never interested me until Tactics on the GBA. Then I played 5, then 6, got bored of both fairly quickly, then tried 4 and noticed a terribly similar patter. I played a bit of 7 and didn't like it and have decided that Final Fantasy is a terribly over-rated series. I love turn-based games, but never have I seen a series that is so derivative.

Any Burnout will do, to be honest.

And how is Final Fantasy so "derivative", as you say?
