I got an old Sega Genesis game last year that works but won't save my game. I was wondering what kind of battery Phantasy Star 2 on Sega Genesis uses for saving so I can replace it and play. Also I wanna note that whoever also has save battery questions feel free to post here as well. Who ever answers a question please specify who you're answering to avoid confusion and let me know if there's already a thread for this before locking it.
I was wondering if Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine for Genesis is supposed to save highscores or not. I have a cart, but every time I power off the system the scores go away. Is that supposed to happen or do I need to get it a new battery?
I haven't played it but most likely not.
High scores were usually not considered worth the extra cost of the memory plus a battery in those days. They usually only used them if a game needed a progress saving feature.
Well then... What was the point of having highscores and a leaderboard that even allowed you to enter your initials if nothing was saved? Were families supposed to just right highscores down?
Yeah.
I believe several Master System game manuals reserved a few pages for that purpose.
(and on other systems it was common for games to leave a couple blank pages, some would label them "notes" and others "high scores")
(or photograph them. Nintendo Power ran a high score pages. Just make sure to get your console in the picture so they know you didn't cheat! )

As @ogo79 said, the SNS-RZ-USA is a prime giveaway that it's not a legit retail cart.
And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)
