Topic: Ripping your own games for personal use.

I want to rip my own N64 cartridges and put the copy on my computer so I can modify a specific game. It will all be for my personal use and I will NEVER EVER give the copy to anyone else or post it online.

Is that okay?

@Monstersstuck1 It may depend on your nation's laws but as far as I know it's perfectly legal to do so - so long as you do not distribute the roms and delete them if you happen to sell the original cartridge. Generally you do need special equipment to do so, how are you planning on connecting an N64 cartridge to your computer?

While this topic might not stay long but in terms of legal side of things it's mostly a no go.
Some juristions do allow backups of volatile media (e,g, floppy, tape, ect) as exceptions but non volatile media like N64 games is generally not allowed.

Regardless of what the law is, there's pretty much no way you'll get in trouble for it unless you do something like distribute it.

The more pressing matter is the process of ripping it, because the tools required to do so are pretty expensive.

If you're keeping it for yourself and yourself only you're fine, distributing it and/or making money from it is illegal.

Go for it, you're fine.

I doubt that "volatile" media would hold if tested again. That was decided in the 2600 era, before games had things like batteries that could and probably will fail before the ROM itself does. You still can't play your N64 games like they were intended if they have batteries or EEPROM (limited write life) for saving and those fail. I'd imagine that if EEPROMs were used as game ROM data storage then, they might have also been like "who's going to want to play these games in 25 years anyways?" (as the 2600 itself is in its 40s).
Not too mention sometimes game PCBs themselves go bad (like somehow traces get cracked) even if the ROMs are still fine (I've heard people speak of Tengen Genesis games suddenly dying, supposedly even 20 years people still hadn't figured out a fix, but the ROMs themselves were supposedly still good if transplanted to a donor PCB).

If you're just doing it on your own PC and not distributing or making any money, no one would even know (and therefore no one is going to care).

Can you imagine a copyright lawyer looking at this thread and screaming "WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!"
