This thread happened specifically because they complained about those systems taking over the retro forums. So let's just let them talk about their retro consoles.
We can talk about Game Cube or N64 in other threads.
So recently i discovered that the female RF/Coax input thingy on my TV had snapped off. No idea when or how, though i assume it was at some point when i was cleaning my entertainment center or something. Regardless, the thingy literally snapped off, so obviously it can't be used anymore. Meaning i can't readily connect my Odyssey2, ColecoVision, Sega Master System or Sega Genesis to my TV (my Atari 2600 is thankfully modded with RCA outputs).
Meanwhile, i'd recently gotten a repro cart of Castlevania Bloodlines. i usually play my Genny games via Retron3, but as some of you may know, depending on how a repro cart is made, they won't always work on clone systems. My Bloodlines cart is one of those — it'll only work on an actual Genny.
So what is one to do? Well, the Shpydar isn't just a retro gamer — he's a retroist in full! So whip out the old Sony VCR and dive into the pile of cables, and BOO-GAH!
@the_shpydar: Lol what a brilliant idea lol. Out of curiosity what's that gray system in the back on the shelf. It kinda looks like an NES is that a clone system?

@Tasuki: Ha, i was actually going to include an "answer key" with my post for the stuff in the background.
The small grey system is a Retron1, which is an NES (only) clone system. To the left of it (you can only see the foot and edge of it) is the Retron3. I picked up the Retron1 (it's like under $20) after the NES slot of my Retron3 starting having problems (as in, the power would randomly cut out ... which is weird, since it works without problems with SNES/SuperFami and Genesis/MegaDrive games). By the way, i do have an NES (my original NES from 1987), but since it had been acting up a bit, i decided to retire it.
By the way, the pile of DVDs in the background center of the picture is the pile of Kung Fu/"chop-socky" flicks that recently got from a friend who was moving (i think i mentioned getting them in another post somewhere or other).
@LztheQuack: From the same junkyard that i pulled Yo Momma from! BAZINGA!
@the_shpydar: Ah ok. How does that work for a NES clone? My NES had to be retired awhile ago and now I want to get something to play my NES games on but really don't want to pay the high prices that NES are going for. Does it play repro carts? How's the sound, graphics etc. Do all games work or are some hit and miss?

@Tasuki: The Retron1 works quite well, though it can be a little off with colors vs an actual NES (though to be fair, that might actually be b/c i have it connected to my flatscreen instead of a CRT). It's not off by much, and it's not bad (some games look just a little washed-out), and if i didn't know the NES games so well, i might not even notice. Compatibility-wise, it plays all the NES repros i have (which are only the CV2 Simon's Redaction Cart and a Zelda II hack, Shadows of the Night), though again that may depend on how the repro carts are made; i expect some might not play on it. It plays all my legit NES carts (including the unlicensed Wisdom Tree games), but i have heard that it may not be 100% (apparently certain games, like CV3, have issues on clone systems). Personally i've had no issues though, and for under $20 (i think i got mine for like $17 including shipping), it's worth grabbing.
@the_shpydar: Awesome thanks for the reply. I think next time I go to my local retro shop I will enquire about it. That was the main thing I was wondering about was the Simon Quest repro. Thanks as always.

have you tried bloodlines with a game genie via retron3?
castlevania 3 works on the second version of the retron3.

As @ogo79 said, the SNS-RZ-USA is a prime giveaway that it's not a legit retail cart.
And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)
@ogo79: Nah, don't have no game genies, though i have heard that might work. I know with the way some repros are made, they require the original console BIOS (or whatever the hell it's called lol), but the genie might use some sort of Robin-Williams-Fu to bypass that.

the only game i had trouble with using a retron3 was low g man. i had to use a top loader or toaster with that one...
low g man is low

So I picked up a Retron 1 after @the_shpydar: gave it the ole thumbs up and after testing it for a bit with some Ducktales and Kirby's Adventure (those were the only two NES games I have access to at this moment) I have to say I am quite pleased with it. Right now I have it hooked up to my Flatscreen since the ole CRT is in another room, so I won't go into color details and stuff like that since obviously they won't be as good on the flat as they would on a CRT. However for what I wanted the system for, it passes the test. I am now able to play NES games without having to spend a fortune on a working NES. Now I just need a repro cart of Simon's Quest.

@Tasuki: Glad you're enjoying the Retron. It is a handy back-up system to have, especially since it's under $20. It's not perfect — i have noticed very minor issues, such as colors being a bit washed out or slightly off, though i suspect that if i hadn't played the games back in the day, i might not even notice.
It's ironic that you just picked one up, since my last retro shop trip ended up with me buying another NES (a sneak preview of the next ShpydarhaulTM post!) because i was missing the fully authentic experience (my original NES still works, but has issues so it has been retired).
@the_shpydar: Yeah I can't say about the colors cause I currently have it hooked up to my Smart TV so yeah once I hook it up to the CRT I will be able to tell. Yes it is a nice backup system as right now my money is a bit tied up on other retro things, but the Retron does the job nicely.

@WaveBoy: Well all you're experiencing is what plenty of people thought, that the first year of the Wii U's lifecycle was underwhelming. 2014 was when the Wii U became fantastic starting with Tropical Freeze in February.
@Tasuki: I think the Wii U gets more hate than what it actually deserves. Splatoon alone could make the system worthwhile to me, it's one of the most fun games I've ever played.
