Just beat Contra with my little brother! Holy crud, what an intense, fun, fantastic music, challenging, and awesome experience! That was amazing. Used the Konami code! Still had toooons of fun. One of the best side scrolling shooters of all time.

Best damn contra there is!
Hope you experienced this Bill Rizer bad boy on your wonky Malfunctioning Frankenstien of a Tube TV.
Anyways! Are you going to check out Contra II: Super C for the NES? Be warned though it's not up to snuff as the original*(just my opnion, and millions of others. lol)*....One thing is for sure the soundtrack is extremely dissapointing and forgettable in comparison and the boss battles were pretty generic(At least in the beginning) and unmemorable for the most part and completely paled in comparison to the ones in the original. even the stage design was kind of boring from an artistic standpoint. Plus i felt the 3rd person base areas(Which were just so special & unique for the time) in the original were totaly superior to the top down stuff in II as well. I may sound like I'm harping on Super C, but i still slightly enjoyed it even more so than the balls out 'arcadey' styled contra l III and ReBirh(Yuck!)! I see Contra as a 10, while Super C being a 7.5.

Count me as one of the rare few then who prefer Super C to Contra. Those "3D" levels are weaker than Louis Tully's social skills. I much prefer the alternative overhead view of Super C and Contra III. Contra III is the best Contra game in my opinion though I have not played any game beyond with Super C in second. Anyway Retro_on_theGo_in_a_Dojo_with_a_yo-yo, nice find their for $3.00! Despite my distaste for some certain levels, Contra is still a must-have NES classic!

@Geonjaha, I really just played it for the experience, but yeah getting 100s sound hard

I'm taking on Metroid soon, everyone wish me luck, I'll definitely need it.

I beat Wario Land 4
on both normal and hard difficulty - all cds / gold crown every level / got the best ending

super hard - in progress. sapphire, topaz, ruby passages clear. By the way, monsoon jungle on super hard is totally unforgiving!

@Chrono_Cross, I'm super jelly. I've devoted myself to playing the original Metroid before buying Super Metroid

Oh, and Wario Land 2 totally needs a 3ds remake

Ninja Gaiden & Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos

I don’t know about you but I think Ninja’s today are as cool today as they were 20+ years ago which helps wall-spring jump the Ninja Gaiden games for the NES to some of my favorite on the entire system! I recently beat the original for the first time (after 23 years) but I was feeling To Legit To Quit right there and followed the up by completing the sequel! Once the first was mastered, the second just played on like a Windmill Shuriken slicing through the air uninterrupted by the thrower. Yes, the games are difficult but like a like a Black Belt Ninja you are not going to become a master without lots of practice, self control, and quick reflexes. I love the music to these games however; my only complaint, despite being incredibly catchy songs, is thaty they are too short and therefore repeat often. But as the gameplay is Fast Times at Ridgemont type nonstop action it was less of a bother. I recommend the first two Ninja Gaiden NES games to anyone who likes an addictive NES classic served up with a bit of frustration sliced by the Dragon Sword.

Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom now is the only one left calling my name. However, I am going to take a break from my Ninja studies and go for my PhD in Ninjitsu sometime when I am ready to go Back to the Future of the NES Ninja Gaiden timeline.

Hey @Emaan1, did you ever download any of those Overworld Maps I suggested from GameFAQs? Also, you shouldn't be jealous my friend. If you had experienced Super Metroid before the original, you wouldn't be able to appreciate the game's design as much as you could. I would also suggest you download and play through Metroid II: Return of Samus, before Super Metroid as well. Believe me, you'll thank me in the end. Well, you might not thank me, but you may think about it.

Post here the recent retro game(s) you have played on the original console they were designed for (no save states and "suspend" feature here - just good ol' fashioned battery back-up or passwords) and beat! Feel free to write your impressions about your awesome (or not so awesome) experience about it too!

Demon’s Crest!
Released: 1994 by Capcom for the SNES!

Untitled Untitled Untitled Untitled

I consider Demon's Crest to be one of the best hidden gems on the SNES. You are anti-hero Firebrand, a red gargoyle who starts out with a shard from the Crest of Fire (which has been broken into many pieces) thus giving you the ability to shoot fire out your mouth and can be upgraded as you progress and find the other shards out and about. The abilities that you gain throughout the game are very cool and add great new gameplay mechanics which do take some time to get used to and perfect. Originally you can only fly, well, more appropriately hover and move left and right from a jump. Other abilites from crests include the Air Crest which when equipped will allow you to fly around infinitely and upwards. The Crest of Water, not hard to guess what this ones does - allows you to swim underwater. The Crest of Earth provides a smashing good time as you use your massive shoulders to plow through seemingly unmovable objects.

This game looks fantastic. Well into the SNES lifecycle, this game is a shining example of what the SNES can display. Levels that consist of things like flying through a burning forest, swimming through a submerged acropolis, and sliding across ice in the mountains all look great. The animations are not smooth like butter however, which is noticeable really only during the big boss brawls but I excused this in my mind as these were just ancient creatures and therefore cannot move around all agile like a galloping gazelle.

Demon’s Crest music is fantastic and unique. Yuki Iwai composed an amazing pipe organ almost church-like soundtrack; fits the atmosphere and the mood perfectly. Memory of the Fallen Ones is a standout song to an outstanding score that you get to enjoy as you watch the ending. I also enjoyed Metropolis of Ruin which plays during your frequent visits to town and practice your headbutts (trust me, you will have to “practice” your headbutt timing too if you want 100% completion), collecting gold, and shopping at the magic and item shop.

Make sure to find everything 100% (vials, talismans, vellum, secret paths) in this game because it has multiple endings because not only do you need it to face the final form of Phalanx and get the “good ending,” but the game has a surprise for you if you are gargoyle enough to accept the challenge. Regarded by some as one of the most difficult bosses in all of video games, the Dark Demon will be there just waiting to test your ultimate power and skill.

It is a dang shame that not many people got to experience this great game. Demon’s Crest is supposedly known to be the only game that had negative sales for a week because more people are said to have returned it for being too hard than actually bought it! That maybe helps explain why we have unfortunately not seen a 4th game. I recommend this to anyone who likes a good challenge and searching out items in a non linear fashion. A great game overall and definitely worthy of the relatively high price to add to your video game collection.

God! (Even though, he's not relative to this subject in any way shape or form.) I wish this retro romp was available for download on the VC! I love the color palette and the art direction to death. With emphasis on death. lol

By the way, anybody who returned this devilish delight because of it's level of difficulty was a fool.

Sorry for the late post but you should play through Zero Mission first. There's really no reason to play the original unless you really want to and are very, very patient.

Just for you.

@Chrono_Cross, don't tell him that! Playing through the original and the rest of the series in order will give him a greater respect, for what each entry has to offer. I can't believe someone as educated as you would recommend anything of the sort. You know as well as I do, he would never be able to look at the original entry the same way again. I thought this thread was about retro respectfulness. lol

Thank you @WaveBoy! You're absolutely correct my friend, besides the facts. I think Chrono is having an off-day. lol

By the way, you're not going to download one of my greatest childhood gaming memories? What about Return of Samus WaveBoy?

I want to play the original, plus $5 for the Virtual Console version is better for me than hunting down a copy of Zero Mission for my GBA
@G4L, I'll be downloading those maps the moment I start playing, just haven't gotten to it yet.

Emaan1 & Waveboy: If you can hang, than I definitely recommend playing NES Metroid before Zero Mission. The no-map thing gets way over blown like it was from a power bomb. A lot of 8 year olds could remember 8-bit Zebes back in 1988. You don't want kids with mullets, tapered-leg stonewashed jeans, and neon pink shirts showing you up now do you?

I'm not going to bother with Zero Mission, its easier to just play the original for a better price. I really wanted to play the original regardless, for the retro factor. Plus like what @WaveBoy said, I think going from the original Metroid to Super Metroid will be a lot more meaningful than if I played Zero Mission first. By the way, its not my first Metroid game, I have all 3 Prime games

You guys are right. What was I thinking?

Emaan, you have to play the original first. Super Metroid will be well worth the wait. Just trust me.
