I have to say, I am a bit shocked but sort of not surprised. While I expect very little from Rare these days but this is madness in my eyes.

Why choose from a range of great characters like Wario, Waluigi or Baby Luigi, when you have all green jelly Luigi and Toadette. Why have regular Toad and Toadette or another character when you can have a blue or yellow dressed Toad? 😵

Well, duh, why go back to those musty dead franchises when you could be making a new Viva Piñata.

Yeah I don’t know either.

Eh! My gameplay videos

Well they aren't really the Rareware of old anyways, so it would make sense for the team to have a desire to move forward to franchises that they would actually be creators of or have some attachment to.

I wish Conker and Banjo belonged to
Nintendo. I spent so much time on Conkers Bad Fur Day

Just sell Banjo and Conker back to Nintendo. It's not like Microsoft is actually going to use them for something.

Gee, I wonder why?

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

Dang, that's unfortunate but not surprising. I definitely would love to see Banjo and Conker back on Nintendo. Heck, even Jet Force Gemini too. Retro could do something amazing with Banjo and/or Conker.

This is how I've understood the situation as well. It's a shame since I've heard many good things about the Banjo series and Conker's Bad Fur Day.

Yeah I agree with you all. It's a sad situation and it's horrible to see IPs just sit and rot. They're dead to me too but hopefully some day they'll license them out to someone like Playtonic Games. That's the only way we will see those franchises revived in my opinion.

I'm fine with a dev wanting to carve a new path and not just milk their old franchises. Honestly, Sea of Thieves looks great.

I say that as I also complain all the time about Sega sitting on top of a gold mine of IP's and not using them so I am a bit of, admittedly, a hypocrite.

@RancidVomit86 I think you're looking Sega and Rare to be a bit more Nintendo lol. Develop Mario to contemporary society but also produce new experiences like Splatoon. Who can blame you for being a hypocrite now? 😬

I think they are probably right to be honest.

Not sure the market is there for them kind of games anymore.

Although it's unfair to use looka yaylee as an example as that was not well received as it was simply bad game

@kobashi100 Hmm I'm not sure. I think there is just the power of the consoles provide nearly too many options now. I always said if there was a Banjo-Threeie with N64 style graphics and game size I'd be happy enough on XBLA or what not. There's no need for a game the size of Kameo. I'd even say Banjo-Tooie was too big for that type of game. Sadly you're right, Yooka-Laylee isn't great. I just hope the follow ups are much improved. Again, 5 huge worlds when there is no need.

Not going to lie: I pretty much lost all hope for some of Rare's IPs throughout the years. I mean, I could appreciate Conker's Bad Fur Day being a cult to the lot, but it personally wasn't my cup of tea and I would have rather taken Twelve Tales: Conker 64 instead. Banjo-Kazooie was amazing on the N64, but even that series began to tank after the N64 games. Grunty's Revenge was pretty average while Banjo-Pilot was...meh. Of course, by the time Nuts n Bolts happened, that was the final nail in the coffin for the series for me. Since then, especially with its main designers moving out, Rare's become a meat sandwich without the meat.

As for Yooka-Laylee, while I would say that game is good, it definitely doesn't peak to the likes of the first two Banjo-Kazooie games. There are definitely flaws in that game, but at the end of the day, I'd much rather play that kind of game than drive in shoddily-built cars and explore super duper empty worlds.

SuperGhirahim64

@StephenYap3 Hmm.. fair points there Stephen. Although it was really that transition of selling Rare that was the catalyst for all of that I think. I agree though, but the GBA games were never going to blow anyone away. Nuts n Bolts was the right game, wrong franchise. That game was perfect for a new I.P. It would be nice to have gotten Threeie even to finish the story. Yooka-Laylee is definitely better than Nuts N Bolts gameplay wise, but there's a lot of unpolish in that game unfortunately. Hopefully it is sorted for Switch.

I never liked Rare games, they have always been incredibly overrated imho. I'd just have liked if Nintendo kept Banjo & Kazooie when they got rid of Rareware, I think that franchise could have been a great one in the right hands and Nintendo could get the best out of it, like they did with Donkey Kong country returns, which is the first real masterpiece in its series. Banjo & Kazooie had a lot of potential and probably it was one of the best games made by Rare but still it was not as great as it could have been. If Nintendo did not sell that franchise they could have made it become that great. It's a pity.

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee

SuperGhirahim64

@LuckyLand I agree with you to a point. Goldeneye was great for its time but PDZ obviously wasn't. In terms of Banjo you're totally right. Maybe some day yet that I.P will go up for sale or licensed out. It's an absolute waste that it is just sitting there rotting away. I hope Playtonic get a go at it.
