I was always one of the guys who bought the pokemon edition with the warmer appeal: red, gold, fire-red and perl. and a friend of mine always prefered the cold versions: blue, silver, leaf-green and diamond...
I wonder if the most pokemon fans decided for either the warm or the cold versions...
(I always bought the special versions too though: yellow, crystal, platinum)
Let's see, for me it was (discarding all third versions): Red, Silver, Ruby, FireRed, and Diamond. Also, I'll be picking up SoulSilver when it hits in the West.
So, to answer your question, no. Not all people who bought Red also bought Gold.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
I stuck with the warmer colors for the first 2 trilogies, since my sister took the other versions and I thought the Pokemon on them were cooler (Charizard and Ho-Oh FTW!), but I've tended to gravitate towards the cooler ones for recent ones (Sapphire and Diamond). Probably would've gotten Ruby though if my friend didn't already have it.
I used to have Leafgreen as well, since that was the color that came out in Japan initially, but I sold it, cuz he Pokeon in Firered were better, and there were more Pokemon I could trade to my Emerald game.
I had Blue, Than Crystal, Leaf Green, Emerald, and Pearl. I prefer the special editions, but when I got Blue, there was no Yellow(not that I knew about special editions), same with Pearl.
I had Red, Blue, and Yellow, and I went with Silver. I'll be going with Heart Gold when it comes out, though. :3

Blue, Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum. Once it became obvious they were always going to release special editions, I always went with those. I have red now too, did a playthru with a friend, we didn't ever get around to trading though. Couldn't have caught them all b/c we both ended up evolving our starters before we saw each other again (played on the metro to work, hung out on weekends).
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
Blue,Sliver,Saphire,Firered, diamond i usuaaly pick because of whose on the cover and i prefer aqyatic pokemo which all have the cover pokemon have in common.

Yellow... wait for it... and.... wait for it.... Crystal. the totality of my pokemon collection. i borrowed emerald from a friend a while back, but that was it. i figure, though, if i'm gonna have one, why not get the best version?

If you're old enough to remember Pokemon Red and Blue, you're too old to be still playing Pokemon
Get off my lawn, you.
