I've noticed a lot of hate floating around the Internet about the original Xbox but I thought it was an awesome console with some great exclusives plus usually the best version of multiplat games.

What's everyone's opinions of the big black box? What games would you recommend to people or would like to go back and play again?

I recently began a play through of Jet Set Radio Future again, for probably the 50th time, but I got to say it's just as good as it always was. Still one of my top 10 favorite games ever.

I sold my GameCube for the Xbox during Dec of 2001.

I thought it was a great console, hardware wise, it was without doubt the most powerful of its generation, and yeah, it was great as far as third party titles and having the best versions. 2001/2002 was somewhat weak as far as exclusives, outside of Halo and MechAssault , but a lot of the SEGA titles helped to alleviate that (JSRF 2, Crazy Taxi 3, House of the Dead 3, Gunvalkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue 2). The Xbox really started to show its worth from about 2003 to 2005, lots of great racing and FPS titles.

The Duke controller was ok when you didn't know any better, but I loved the S controller, better than the GameCube model IMO.

Last console where we held link cable parties as well with 4 vs 4 Halo and Halo 2 matches. Like a lot of Xbox owners, I really didn't get into Xbox Live until the 360 generation.

Overall it was the best transition console for prior Dreamcast owners or fans of the late 90's / early 2000s PC scene / and or more core fans who had enjoyed the N64 for stuff like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, San Francisco Rush series, or the Turok games.

Aesthetically it probably aged the worst of its gen, that green X on the big black box is just tacky.......the GCN and PS2 variants have held up better.

I have been thinking of picking one up to add to my retro collection. Honestly I dont have that much experience with the Xbox as I did with the PS2 and Gamecube that gen. My friend had one though and I remember playing a few games on it mainly Project Gotham Racing and a Dungeon and Dragons game I think it was, Also played Soul Caliber II on it but I always felt that it looked and ran better on the Gamecube,

The only one I have recently played on is a coworker of mine has a modded one which we play mostly SNES and arcade games on lol.

I may be pretty much Nintendo consoles now but back then I had an Xbox. I took a while to transition from the PS1 to next gen and I chose Xbox simply because it had mo' power! Halo was the first game I bought for the system and it was such an awesome experience. One of the few times where I was really "wow'ed" by a video game. I still have it and would like to hook it up again someday and play some Halo. Off the top of my head, the games I have Halo 1 & 2, GTA San Andreas, Ninja Gaiden (1st edition, and Ninja Gaiden 1,2, 3 NES games unlocked), NCAA Football 2003, Madden (w/ Shaun Alexander on the cover, - Go Hawks), Jet Set Radio Future (would like to go back and play more of that game), Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (such a time sink), True Crime: New York City and that is all I can pretty much remember. I may never buy a future Xbox but I will always keep my original.

It had quite a few excellent exclusives. Gen 6 was probably the last (only?) gen to have multitudes of awesome exclusives on every major console, Dreamcast included.

I originally had a Dreamcast to start of that gen. After long debate on rather to move on to Xbox or Gamecube I chose the Xbox and picked one up on launch day. 10 hours of sitting in a metal folding chair and arguing with unorganized Walmart management were well worth it the moment I started to play Halo. I knew then that I had made the right decision and didn't regret a thing. Went on to have a lot of fun with the Xbox and still think of it as a great console with lots of good exclusives that pioneered a lot of the standards in console gaming today. I later got a Gamecube, traded it with a friend for his PS2, and then bought a Gamecube again when the MK:DD bundle came out.

Me and brother were just coming off the Dreamcast as well......we had bought a GameCube together during launch, but outside of Rogue Squadron 2, we were a bit disapointed. Luigi's Mansion was very meh, I we weren't that excited for Pikmin and Smash Melee (this was before it was huge).........and Mario Sunshine and Windwaker seemed to be more of a step backwards that forwards in the mind of a teen boy......so once we realized just how big of a killer app Halo was, we jumped on board right away.

I don't know I was never blown away by Halo or even really enjoyed it that much. My I played it a few times with my friend (he was obsessed with it) and felt that it was just meh. But then again FPS were never my thing,

Did you play it during Nov of 2001? I was blown away by it, sure you had Goldeneye and some other console FPS's before that......but the scale of the orginal Halo hadn't been seen on a console.

Not sure when I played it but the only FPS games I have played before that are Doom. and GoldenEye. And again I am just not nor was I a big FPS fan. So for me it was meh.

Halo didn't sell me until Halo 2. The first one was OK, but the second one was phenomenal, and I still regard it as one of the best, if not the best, FPS to this day.

The original xbox is one of the best machines out there for emulation. A modded unit with a frontend called CoinOps installed is a total powerhouse of classic games.

Rallisport Challenge 2 is where it's at, for me. Loved the game when it first came out.

Also, I was strangely drawn into Links 2001 online on the original Xbox. Truly revolutionary online play there, that has been copied by almost every golf game since!
