I'd say play on the N64 just because well original hardware always feels right for me where possible. If you don't have an N64 then the GameCube version if like me you love the control and would prefer TV.

@ReaderRagfish The crescent moon and Muslim chanting was also removed from second edition n64 versions.

The chickens were censored too, they put feathers all over them.

Hi guys. So, I've never really played much of Ocarina of Time (don't shoot!) and I'm looking to finally try it out fully. Only question is, there's now the 3DS version of it, and I wanna know which version is better. Somehow by an act of God I own the gamecube version that has masterquest on it, got it cheap back in the day. I tried playing it as a teenager but got confused on what to do at a certain part and stopped.

So, should I stick with my gamecube version, or play the 3DS? Which one has better gameplay?

The 3DS version! It also includes Master Quest, has better models and textures and at the same time it is faithful to the original visual art, just prettier. Besides, the geometry looks better on 3DS than on modern TVs. On top of that, the stereoscopic 3D is one of the best!

If you like it you could get Majora's Mask afterwards, it's more mysterious and creepy but also one of the best games ever.

Both are must-have or at least must-play.

3DS version definitely. For me the nicer graphics and 3D effect alone make the 3DS version worth it, but there are are also control advantages to the 3DS version. I especially liked the gyro aiming when using arrows, boomerang and hook shot. Also the 3DS version makes the water temple a bit less frustrating by making it easier to take the iron boots on and off. There's also an optional hint system in the 3DS version should you desire it.

The only advantages I can see for playing other versions of the game are 1) you want to be able to play on your TV or 2) you want to experience the game in its original state, 1990s graphics and all.

I agree with you and you mention additional important things.
