Good list, SSBF, quite a few of those games are on my wish-list as well. Still, your list only has one wrestling game on it, and it isn't WCW/NWO Revenge, so, I disapprove...

This. Greatest wrestling game. I know some prefer WWF No Mercy, but i think Revenge was the better overall game (of course, i was also a die-hard WCW fan in the day, so...). I may have to hook the system up and play some this week. I wonder what created/edited wrestlers i still have on the roster ...

@SSBF:
Oh, but you MUST add one game to the list -- BLAST CORPS! Pure awesome.

I loved my 64 back in the day; the only time i ever even considered a PS1 was when FF7 came out. Nothing else on the system really did anything for me (though i did think RE2 was cool in the 5 minutes i saw of it back then -- it would be years later before i got sucked into all the RE games), though Twisted Metal made for fun multiplayer.

I'll add that to my list. I heard it was amazing.

@SSBF: Add Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon to your list. One of the best games for the n64. I hear the sequel is great too.

TwilightV

A few more for that list:
Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage
Quest 64
Flying Dragon

TwilightV

Bankai

The N64 was definately one of the consoles we played most when I was growing up (we being myself and my brothers). Add in one friend who lived nearby, and we were mostly playing multiplayer on it, which was what the console was best for.

Super Smash Brothers,
Gauntlet Legends,
Mario Kart 64
Mario Party/ Golf/ Tennis
Mace: The Dark Ages

The console was just great for those.

For one player games one really stands out - Shadowman was an AWESOME horror/ action game. I got 3/4 through it, and then my memory card corrupted, and I never hard the heart to try it again.

For one player games,

Kid_A

I just got Banjo Kazooie. Banjo Tooie is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time, and Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts is probably in the top 10, so it's crazy that I'm just now getting to play the original. Obviously, it's mind blowing. Probably the weakest of the three, so far, but in no way is it a weak game. I can already tell this is going to be my newest obsession.

To each their own. But it was totaly lack luster. Sure it had some amazing titles and just one of them was worth buying the system alone, but i got most of my fix from the PSOne. Resident Evil 1,2,3? Check. Mega Man 8,X4,X5,X6? Check, Castlevania SOTN? Check. The list goes on and on from Tomba, Rayman, Parappa the Rapper, Silent Hill, FFVII, FFVIII, Poy Poy, Klonoa, Jumping Flash!, Street Fighter ect. The N64 didn't have enough variety where as the PSOne did. Where were the Horror, Fighting, RPG's and most importantly Sprite based games and SideScrollers? The N64 may have produced full 3D worlds and graphics...but they lacked the detail, creativity, and charm of previous SNES games. As Amazing as Mario 64 was it didn't have the detail and imagination of Super Mario World.

Fighter-SSB, Fighter's Destiny
Horror-Resident Evil Series
RPG-Paper Mario, Ogre Battle 64, Zelda games [sort of]
Side Scroller-Yoshi's story, Kirby 64
Exactly how many N64 games did you get when it was popular?
But, I see your point. I can't think of many more for those genres. There were almost NO RPGs for the N64, excluding JRPGs.

Resident Evil series?lol....The only Resident Evil game the N64 got was RE2. And I have Yoshi's Story, which is a total bore fest and overall totaly mediocre. Kirby 64 isn't that great either...But still those few gems are worth buyin the system alone.

Ever heard of the Virtual Boy? And I'm not talking about no emulator either. That thing DIED after less than a 1 year in the market.

Only one of them was worth it? Which one:
Goldeneye007, Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask or how about Super Smash Brothers?

What the heck are you smokin'? Super Mario 64 had a ton of detail and imagination. You're talking like as if SM64 was a game with blurry empty environments such as the ones in Superman 64. No sir, SM64 was in fact the example of a detailed game you kept going back to whenever you had a discussion about how post-1996 N64 games were mostly half-baked productions and yet SM64 looked better than those games. The ones came out two or three years after the system's launch.

In SM64 you didn't have one texture used on everything (BUT it's funny that in SMW they re-used the same backgrounds for much of the game, eh?) . In SM64 you have textures that weren't there just for decoration. But if they looked like they had a particular texture, Mario could actually interact with it differently than with other textures (like some allowed Mario to walk on them defying gravity). That's what was not only lacking in many N64 games BUT also on PSX games of that time. Then you got the gameplay which put to shame the one seen in hyped games such as Tomb Raider. I mean seriously, does anybody remember the drag it was to make Lara Croft JUMP in the first game? Or just to move her around?. Compare that craptacular gameplay to SM64. No contest.

Donatello wrote:

Also, most N64 games don't hold up well nowadays due to their below 30fps framerates...

Games at present (usually multiplatform games) barely run at 60fps and you mostly see them running between that and 30fps. On HANDHELDS, you see MANY games running at the same frame rate as a N64 game. And yet that isn't a problem. Nor is it for those that buy N64 games on Virtual Console (it isn't for me). BTW, still images at 30fps looks better than running at 60fps. So not everthing running at 60fps is better

I actually have the Virtual Boy along with the rare Jack Bros hehe....and No i never considered it a console, if i did I would of obviously labeled it as their worst console, but technically it's a hand held.

And yes Mario 64 is still lacking that creative punch that SMWorld gave us or regarding detail that is. Look, Mario 64 is a 10/10 without a doubt...but it lacks the charm of the previous games at least for me anyways. But again, the PSOne and the N64 were the beginning of the 3D era so I shouldn't exactly harp on these games too much.

And which games are you talking about on handhelds that run below 30fps? i havent played 'one' DS title that runs below 30fps....and if so, it must be very rare.

And SSB Bros N64 is crap compared to Brawl and Melee...there's no contest. It isn't even worth playing if you've played the others.

I LOVED that game! I remember that we had it during my "pink is awesome, cute is cool" phase, so I always wanted to play as the girl in the rabbit suit [I believe her name was Nancy]. Unfortunately, we got it before my "turn in games, get MONEY!" phase, so I don't have it anymore.

Just let it happen.

While many people may find what I'm about to say somewhat weird, I like the N64 because of it's small amount of fantastic games. The NES had far too many good games to be able to all buy. While the SNES decreased that amount, it was still a lot of games that would've broke the bank. The N64 had about 45-70 games that were fantastic, and that's a good amount for a console. It's probably because of my personal taste, but I think the N64 has the best amount of quality games out of any console. Just remember; personal opinion.

That should be just right. I'm planning on gettting sixty-eight if not more games for the Nintendo 64, so that'll be enough to last me years if not around a decade.

It was actually a "portable" system (as much as the GameCube was also portable with the "handle" that made it possible to move it around the house). But it wasn't a handheld.

Well despite all these years (and many, many clones) SM64 is the game ppl keep looking back as the perfect example of a well crafted 3D platformer. You talk about it's lack of creativity and yet that game inspired Gabe Newell while working on Half-Life (mainly its gameplay mechanics) and inspired Rare Ltd while they worked on GoldenEye 007. So I dunno... I think it was extremely creative. SMW was a great game no doubt, but it simply was more of the same old 2D stuff (some say it was inferior to SMB3). Anywhoo, SM64 broke new ground in almost every level of game design. Aside from graphics, SM64 is a heck more fun and creative than most games from this day and age.

You'll find that some PS3 and 360 games actually dip below 30fps. Oh yes they do. So... why would you even find it "rare" that 3D DS games also dip below 30fps? Try some of the Call of Duty games for the DS. The first ones that came out run below 30fps. Some other -30fps DS games that comes to mind would be Warhammer and Assassin's Creed Altair's Chronicles .

Yeah I know that Nintendo brags that NDS games run at 60fps but if you remember they also said that about the N64.

I sadly had my N64 stolen from me in college. Dumb roomie got wasted during a party he threw in OUR apartment, and I was gone. Came back to see it had been ganked and all the games were taken, including the golden Zelda Cart. I never got to finish DK 64, I hope they bring it to VC so I can finally finish the thing.
Oh and SSBFan: No Wave Race??!? How could you not want that one on your list?

Sorry, 'portable' you knew what i ment ;p
As for DS games running below 30fps, even if there are a few like you pointed out I havent ran into any...yay, my luck
As for Mario 64. There's no doubt that many people look back at it as being the perfect 3D Platformer and I agree that it is. And I dont want to sound that it's uncreative at what it does, I'm just saying the N64 didn't quite pump out the art direction/detail of it's previous brother the SNES. Again, the N64 and PSOne were in that era where 3D was new so what do you expect unless we're talking prerendered backgrounds of course ;p And nahh, actually Super Mario World is my least favorite Mario Sidescroller. Not to say it's bad or anything, It's a fantastic game, But my favorite would have to be SMB2(especially) along with SMB3 and SMB1.
World is definitly inferior to 3 if you ask me. What i was saying earlier is that Super Mario World busted out the detail. Mario 64 didn't capture that detail because it didn't have the power. It was creative for what it was, but there were hardwhere limitations in the beginning of 3D.

Take a look at Galaxy, now that's detail and imagination Now Don't get me wrong Mario 64 is clearly a 10/10 I was just pointing out the hardware limitations of the N64 and that it couldn't capture the detail from SNES games to the 3D world. N64 games were more baren, basic and well...polygonal ;p

It's because Wave Race 64 is on the Virtual Console, just like Star Fox 64, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shard, Pokemon Snap!, and among others is not on my wishlist. I want them, but I'll buy them off the Virtual Console.
