Topic: N64 Setup?

22 of my 23 N64 games are able to display with my current setup. BUT every game does not start up right away. When I place the cartridge into the system and power on, my expectation is for the game to display on the television. Instead, I receive a black screen 90% of the time.

The only thing that seems to work is repeating typical start up process between two alternating cartridges until one finally displays. The more I do this the more likely other games will work.

TO HAVE THE N64 DISPLAY PROPERLY ON MY TV AT START UP, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

The current setup I have is...

Nintendo 64 w/ Expansion Pack

Just to note...
My system and games have been kept in very good condition.
I know for retro gaming, the old tube TV's are best, but that won't work on the fire place mantle or for guest (Not an option).

Thank you for your help in advance. I feel like this may be a common issue people have setting up their retro systems. Your knowledge and wisdom is greatly appreciated. Thank you again oh great ones!

The most success I've had with the N64 on a LCD TV is to use the standard TV lead that comes packaged with a Gamecube with it (the connection to the console is the same as the N64)....I had a weird problem using the original N64 TV cable where every time there was a bright flash on the screen (such as when using certain weapons on Turok: Dinosaur Hunter), the signal to the TV would briefly cut out altogether, for about a second which is obviously bad when it happens in the middle of gameplay.

However, since I switched to using the cable that was packed in with the Gamecube, it's all been 100% fine.

So if that's an option for you (using a Gamecube TV lead or obtaining one) then you might want to give that a try.

You have no chance to survive, make your time!

Maybe your "N64" cable is bad because the "N64" and "GameCube" cables should be THE SAME THING (unless Europe was different, which I'm guessing because you call it a "lead").

S-video cable (if your tv is ok with it), or don`t bother at all - use the original cable.

Thank you for the replies oh great ones.
I wanted to try each and every suggestion, so here we go!

dereq:--

I plugged the N64 and Wii into separate inputs. I turned the Wii on first; no display. I then powered up the N64 and switched to it's input; no display.

The Wii works perfect when plugged directly into the television.
The N64 does not register when plugged directly into the television.
This makes sense to me as the N64 requires an upscaler/converter and the Wii does not for modern televisions.

TromaDogg:--

I didn't relize the composite cables were the same for the N64 and GameCube. No such luck when using the GameCube composite cable and connecting through the switch or directly to the television. King Mike might be onto something there for you.

Pocky:--

I bypassed the converter and plugged the switch directly into the composite inputs of the television as suggested.

N64 with original composite cable; no display.
N64 with Gamecube composite cable; no display.
Wii with composite cables, DISPLAY.

My understanding is the N64 requires an upscaler/converter and so it won't display. I as well have suspicions the "Composite to HDMI Converter" isn't doing its job.

The television does not have s-video input.
UltraHDMI Mod sounds fun , but i'd prefer to keep my equipment in its original condition.

For what it's worth, I had gotten the #1 Best Seller on Amazon and it stated it supports N64 specifically.
Is there a recommended "Composite to HDMI Converter"?

premko1:--

There is no s-video cable input for my television.
