@DarthNocturnal Well they still will sell the older games but games that were in development got scrapped. Just look at the original Battlefront 3.

@ogo79 Knowing your opinion on the N64, don't you think representative games on that would be Superman 64 as well as Quest 64 (of course without memory card support, since I don't think Nintendo bothered with that on VC)?
I remember playing Gex 3 (before I quit after losing saves to my third-party memory card) and while it wasn't exactly Mario 64, the random voices got annoying rather fast (not sure if it was different on the PS1 version, since of course that was CD and was supposed to have more voice with all the space. Or was he still annoying, just saying different things while he was being annoying?)

What?! Who are these ppl complaining about the the trident. How dare you mock something that revolutionised home console gaming.
If any game should grace the N64 mini that Nintey would have to lobby to get on is Star Wars Pod Racers double sticks blew my mind back in the day!

Some of Mario Odyssey is seriously giving heart palpitations.... that plumber is trying to kill me!

Not as good as TTYD (which might be one of the best RPGs ever made) but Paper Mario is still a lot of fun.

Funny, I actually prefer PM64 over TTYD (which is still an amazing game).

Anyways, for me...

Super Mario 64

Mario Kart 64

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Paper Mario

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (One of my least favorite games in the series, but at least its Multiplayer Modes were a blast)

Super Smash Bros (Not Melee or Smash 4 good, but it's still good on its own even today. I just wish I could say the same for Brawl...)

Mario Party 3

Mario Tennis

Bomberman Hero

Bomberman 64: The Second Attack!

F-Zero X

Star Fox 64

Dr. Mario 64

Yoshi's Story

Donkey Kong 64 (I would say Banjo-Kazooie, but...sigh...)

I haven't included Mario Party 1 or 2 since I personally liked 3 more than those two (MP1 was good, but hasn't held its age for me while MP2 felt like an expansion patch DLC). As good Bomberman 64 was, I leaned towards Hero and The Second Attack as the better games for me. I didn't include Mario Golf since I felt that the later games expanded very well on its mechanics (plus Bowser...oh my goodness, he looks like a cheap party costume from a monster movie...thank you, Snake) and I have Mario Golf: World Tour with me, so I could just jump onto that when I need a Mario Golf fix. Donkey Kong 64 took Banjo-Kazooie's place because...well, curse you, Microsoft. I would've put Pokémon Puzzle League on this list, but it was either that or Yoshi's Story for me, the latter which I thought was dece.

I kinda want them to make a Gameboy Mini more than an N64 Mini. But if a N64 was to be made I'd probably expect ~15 games. These are the ones I think would make the most sense if possible...

Has to happen:
1. Super Mario 64
2. Ocarina of Time
3. Mario Kart 64
4. Super Smash Bros
5. StarFox 64

Rare, which makes it tricky. But in an ideal world these would be on it
6. GoldenEye 007
7. Donkey Kong 64
8. Diddy Kong Racing
9. Banjo-Kazooie
10. Conker's Bad Fur Day

Going a bit deeper into the library
11. Majora's Mask
12. Wave Race 64
13. Paper Mario
14. Pokemon Snap
15. F-Zero X

Notable mentions
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (if you thought Rare was hard)
Mario Party (if they want broken controllers)
Perfect Dark
Mario Golf/Tennis
Rayman 2 (They don't even need to ask, Ubisoft has already put it on the list)

However, one other thing that could be stopping it is the controller. It's a more advanced device than the NES and SNES, with analog. Possibly more tricky to recreate and more expensive, especially if they wanted enough around for four-player support. Wasn't the N64 Control Stick's design considered rough on the thumbs (and I'm thinking besides Mario Party 1 blisters, of which Nintendo's response was like "you're not holding the controller the right way, but if you're going to keep doing that, you should wear gloves".)

I actually think the original controller is the main reason for wanting an N64 mini. Yes the analogue stick is poor compared to modern equivalents but it's no where near as unreliable as some people online imply. I've got a couple that don't work 100% right but we absolutely hammered those things for years and some N64 games don't feel right at all with an analogue stick stuck to a big ball as opposed to the tiny ball and stick of the authentic controller.

More importantly there are no modern controllers that allow you to exactly mimic the 6 face button layout of the N64 controller. The camera buttons are pretty terrible as action buttons (and they always were) but some games made good use out of them. FPS's certainly but a few other games like Zelda too. I know there are work arounds like mapping 2 of the missing buttons to the extra shoulder buttons but they're compromises.

@skywake I completely agree on a GameBoy Classic Edition. If they could get Pokemon and Tetris on it then that device would be a phenomenon capable of selling incredible volumes just like the original did. I think the potential audience for GameBoy is much much bigger than for any home console - it always was.

There are a few bigger questions surrounding a GameBoy Classic Edition though like how closely do you try to replicate the original screen. Do you just use a modern backlit colour LCD screen but apply a green filter to everything or do you go more authentic to the original experience bearing in mind that the original screen was awful even at the time?

A GB classics may end up being a bit expensive, since they would need a screen, battery, speaker, etc, and probably wireless capabilities for multiplayer.

Of course, they could cut many many corners there and still offer a good experience.

Imagine if they actually used a high quality backlit monochrome dot matrix screen

@Meowpheel They can sell a 2DS for €80, GameBoy requires cheaper parts, no need for high end stuff. I think it's feasible. The only thing I'm not sure about is making it a "mini" console, it's already small enough.

Would they though? We'd have all thought that wireless NES and SNES controllers would have made sense. I could see them going with a wired multiplayer solution.

@Octane And yet they sell the relatively simple NES and SNES minis for a premium price tag. We can assume they will add that same premium to any portable entries.

Of course they wouldn't have a excuse not to add more than 30 games. And yeah I'd totally expect it to be more of a "classics" and less of a "mini"- but the idea of a tiny gameboy is adorable.

Wired communications would be feasible too... I guess... Maybe with simple micro usb ports, they could reuse the same port for charging or something.

The NES and SNES mini have HDMI out so I don't see why a GB Mini wouldn't have a proper LCD in colour and with a backlight. Especially if they include GBC games which would only make sense. Some things are best left in the past.

In terms of two player? There are three ways they could go about it and I'm not talking about wireless or not. Their first option is to have two player work only between GB Minis. The second option would be to use WiFi and potentially talk to GB games on the 3DS and Switch VC. Lastly they could go all out with the retro theme and use the original connector and also make it fully compatible with the original GB. I like the third option.

Lastly, Mini or Classic? .... How about Gameboy Classic Slim?

Maybe this thread should be “Nintendo Classic Editions wishlist/ expectations “ or something to that effect. Too many possibilities to ignore for other platforms (GB/C, GBA, N64, a “Volume 2“ for NES/ SNES Classic or any future Classic Editions).

Yeah, it probably should be. There are a lot of different kinds of this sort of thing they could do. A thread just for general speculation would be nice and we've already derailed this one.

@skywake About a proper LCD on a Game Boy Mini... that brings back the color issue on GBC.
As we know, the original GBC and first model GBA did not have a backlight, so often games were designed around the dim screen (would explain why it seems like GBC developers preferred the very bright colors).

The SP2 is almost eye-searing bright when playing GB games since the standard palette was meant to be seen on the dim screens of the older consoles.

im going to try to answer this as great as i can after consuming beverages.
#1-spam makes me fart. a lot
#2-the best system to play games on and not rage quit is the n64 because the games suck so bad that no one should care to get far enough in them to reach a point where they say "enough is enough" and alas they quit. they should properly shut down the system at the title screen and throw the system in a landfill.
its good for the soil in the first place.
#3-i was not lying when i said that spam makes me fart. a lot.

They managed to get it to work well enough on the 3DS VC. I don't think it'd be that huge of an issue.
