So I've searched and can't seem to find a list of favorite video game 8-bit music anywhere on NL. I am constantly looking for great chiptunes and would love insight from everyone regarding some of your favorite music. This could include newer retro styled 8-bit music games such as the Bit Trip Series. I'm especially interested in catchy, interesting or moving pieces

Some of my favorites include:
Bit Trip Series, especially "Control" from Bit Trip Core (I flipping love it - so CATCHY!!!!) and "Strange Comfort" from Bit Trip Flux (credits music, also AWESOME)
Castlevania III (basically the whole soundtrack)
"The Moon" from Ducktales, as well as theme song
The Grand Palace theme from "The Adventure of Link"
"Battletoads" theme
"Hammer Brothers theme" , "Underground mix" and the ending theme (whatever it's called) from Super Mario Bros. 3
Ninja Gaiden opening theme (and many others)

Also, what I've heard so far of VVVVVV, I REALLY like. escapeVektor's music seems pretty good, but can anyone recommend a particular tune or tunes from it?

I really, really hope that people respond to this post. I'm eager to find more music!!! NOTE - I'm also interested in 16-bit music, but perhaps that could be a separate discussion,

Clash At Demonhead is another one, all tracks are cool but the underwater level music is the one you should check out

@2 - cool, I'll check that out.

And of course I can't leave off Mega Man tunes, especially the Dr. Wily music from Mega Man 2. Actually, I'd be curious to also hear some more song favorites specifically from Mega Man games, since that little blue guy has so many games! (I haven't even played most of them).

Just found the entire Gimmick soundtrack for NES. Highly recommend it - it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

This is the complete soundtrack to Gimmick!, a later SunSoft title only released in Japan and Europe. The Japanese version is the only game to make use of the FME-07 chip for expansion audio, which allowed for three additional square waves on top of the system's original five channels. All song titles are official, with [bracketed] titles clarifying where they are from in game. Enjoy!

#1 Castlevania 1! Most of the Castlevania games that followed come pretty close as being as great. But the first one inspired me to be a musician.

Zelda and Mario always had really intricate music. Looking at it from a musicians perspective, those tunes are suprisingly catchy and memorable for being so well thought out and complicated.

Contra had some great tunes. I know that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the first one) for the NES gets a bad reputation for a game, but I love the music on that game as well.

I kinda like Megaman music, but I can't find much that is memorable, but still great to listen to. Gyromite had a pretty catchy tune on it. I love the Game C or bonus stage music on Balloon Fight. The 'training' theme on Punch-out is really cool. Ahh, oh yes, Ghosts and Goblins was also very cool. Check out Commando (not bionic, just Commando).

I'm not sure if I can give you anything obscure, I generally liked games made by Nintendo, Capcom, and Konami. Stick with those guys and you'll find great music in all their games.

Thanks for all the suggestions, shredmeister! I'm familiar with some of the music you mentioned, but not all. I'll be sure to check it out. As always, any more thoughts or insights into awesome 8-bit music are welcome!!!

Gradius stage 1-1
megaman 2 (? or 3) snakeman level.
Tetris very nice russian folksongs.
Castevania indeed, best composer ever. I think hes the same guy as the one that created megaman music.
Zelda's indeed.. (though zelda 2 got a really weird tune, almost un_zelda, very catchy though)
Mario's indeed (especially mario 2)
