Ugh. Look, can we just stop with this? Everywhere I go I always see more and more Sonic hate. If you don't like him, that's fine, just drop it. If he sucks so much why make such a big deal over it?
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
The first Sonic is a great game, the balance and design is just great (unless you are playing in 50Hz). At the time, the visuals really stood out and I still think it looks great. The Zone themes were varied and not just generic 'lava' or 'ice' worlds, the physics for running and rolling had a hidden depth, and the overall design and placement of enemies is perfect for speed runs and the like. I'll be honest, I got Sonic 2 when it came out and knew even then, despite the hype, I didn't like it as much as the first. The running speed was increased and I felt this lost some of the skill required, which set the tone for subsequent games...
Let's take a look at the quality of Sonic games. We all know/can check when they came out. This is considering what I've played. And I've played a quite a bit of Sonic. They're in no particular order other than the categories they're listed under, but I'm trying to keep them chronological.
Great: Sonic 2 Sonic 3 & Knuckles Sonic Adventure 2/Battle
Good: Sonic 1 Sonic CD Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island. Sonic Adventure/DX Sonic Advance Sonic Advance 2 Sonic Rush
Okay-ish Dr. Robonik's Mean Bean Machine Sonic Spinball Sonic R Sonic the Fighters
Barely Bearable Sonic 1 (8-bit) Sonic 2 (8-bit) Sonic Triple Trouble Sonic Chaos Sonic Drift Shadow the Hedgehog
Awful Sonic Labyrinth Sonic Heroes
Sonic was great in 16-bit, and he has some good-ish games now every now and then nowadays, but mostly they sucked after the Adventure games. End of.
EDIT: These are my opinions, people. Not facts. Don't read them as if I'm stating them as facts.
I love all the old 2D sonic games, alot of people seem to dislike the first one but I love it. It really stands out from the other two despite haveing the same hero and simaler stages it feels almost like a whole diferent game series to me (more emphasis on the platforming rather then speed). SA was ok but SA2:battle improved on it, the VA wasent that good but is great compared to what followed. Sonic Heros was a bit fun at first but got repetitive before even beating the game with one team. Shadow the hedghog I actully liked it showed signes of polish to the gameplay rather then the movies, witch is missing from the series. Sonic(06) was so bad it's the only Xbox game I dident sell (kept it as a novelty) im not sure if the Blaze parts wear that good or just felt that way compared to the rest of it. Secret Rings was a step forward, Black Knight was two steps back. I dont even want to talk about Unleased the Xbox version coudent have felt more Autopilot and the Wii version was uninspired.
Ure facts arent straight. Sonic Heroes was good even if sega is gon 2 burn in hell.
*sigh * I thought I said they AREN'T facts. Are you capable of reading? I didn't like Sonic Heroes for more than 5 minutes, neither did many of the other people I know who played it. Besides that, I thought you said you hated Sonic?
LOL my only weakness. Ok the truth, Sonic and Knuckles is my favorite, But Sonic Heroes(dreamcast) is right up there in awesomeness.
Sonic and Knuckles really was an innovative idea way ahead of its time. Basically DLC... but not downloaded, haha.
Of course... I also don't like DLC in theory, so I give them credit for the innovation only. I still think developers should just finish the game and release it all at once. From what I've read, Knuckles was intended for Sonic 3 originally, but they ran out of time and ended up making users pay for two games instead of one. Cool!
There was one for Game Gear that I liked, too, but I forgot what it's called. Even as a youngster I finished it on the day I got it, though, which probably means I wouldn't care about it at all if I played it again today.

Secondly, I didn't say it was a FACT that Sonic Heroes was bad, I said it was my OPINION that it was bad.
Thirdly, why are you telling me to get a dictionary, when you seem to be incapable of spelling any word in the English language? I could say the same thing about your failed attempt at insulting me by calling me stupid. I know I'm not, and that's good enough for me.
I have four Sonic games total. On my Genesis I have Sonic Spinball,Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and on VC I have Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I had adventure for the DC and then later on the GC. So there is a lot of gaps to the series I have missed. I read it somewhere and I cannot remember where but the article said they need to quit trying to fix Sonic and just make a Sonic game. I do not know if its the gimmicks like giving him a sword or what. I think the series has just had its ups and some downs. I think sonic used to be a pretty good game on the Genesis. As far as the last 5 or more years I do not know and it would take a lot of catching up to do. In some respects the series is probably overrated. But if they nail the core gameplay down its a good time to be had.

ALL IM SAYING IS. Get ure facts straight becuz sonic KISSED a girl in a VIDEO GAME. that is not my fault so that is not racism so you go get a dictionary and prove it wrong stupid cuz u know ure rong and dat is good enugh for me and Dante and whoknew
@Dante: Yeah, good idea, check out the reviews. I enjoyed it for a while, but it suffered from some minor camera issues and occasional level design flaws. (I'm stuck at a "boss" where you're supposed to stand on a tiny platform and kill waves of baddies. It's ridiculously stupidly hard!)
