The evolution of gaming is pretty dynamic. You can't really place things into neat little categories as easily as you used to.
Traditional platformers aren't anywhere near as popular as they were 20 years ago, but I think what people liked about platformers was gradually absorbed by other genres that gained popularity. Action-adventure games like Tomb Raider, Uncharted, and even Zelda have a lot of platforming influence.
RPGs followed similar trajectory. They aren't as popular as they once were, but so many AAA games these days have RPG elements in them like character progression and equipment stats.
(not really sure if "I read this thing on Wikipedia, is it true?" deserves its own thread tbh)
Feels like 50% of all indie games are platformers. And Nintendo also has tons in stores for WiiU and 3DS.
What would make you believe there are few platformers these days?
Compared to the late 90's, way fewer platformers are developed nowadays than back then.
That's because around the 2000's, gaming hit the mainstream, and with it, a more general interest in the concept of fictional environments to do stuff in. And frankly, many of the people who got to gaming later simply didn't care much for platformers, since they were generally considered a "kid's genre". Add to that the increasing success of RPG's, Sports games, and strategy games, and platformers obviously lost a lot of relevance.
Also, the Mario 64 effect made incredibly many developers put out incredibly terrible platformers in the late 90's, so the amount of good platformers hasn't reall changed that much - they're just less of a focus among gaming communities.
When I did some research in Wikipedia...Is this true?
No. Also, Wikipedia has links to the "sources" that page was using if you want to fact check them...those little numbers by the words aren't just decorations, nor are the links at the bottom of the page...
When I did some research in Wikipedia, it says that platform games are not as popular as they used to be and not many of them show up. Is this true?
(citation needed)
Wikipedia is full of opinion passed off as fact. (and article czars that ninja-edit attempts to insert actual facts they don't agree with)

And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)
There are tons of platformers. Most indie games, just about every game starring Mario or Donkey Kong or Sonic or Rayman in the last few years, the hordes upon hordes of fan games and ROM hacks based on Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog... They're probably more common now than they've ever been in history.
And for 3D ones... well, that game by Platonic Games is coming. A Hat in Time is coming. Lobodestroyo is coming... it's like a mini collectathon renaissance in the indie world.
Their was never or anything called an platform games as "Platform as many nicknames for it. Could be
Action
Advanture
RPG
Get what I am saying????? Back then we have this thing called Beat-em-ups, where it was an ( the next best thing to an fighter with the best graphics ), and was probably the apex of all "platform" games.
Most platform games are "collect the rocks" . Take "Conker's Badfurday", which has extreme usage of fowl adult language, and rips from various film venues ( but then again who does not : RE2 elevator shotgun scene/Terminator ).
The basic platformer, could morph into multitudes of gameplay and calling it platformer just dumbs it down. Take DKC which turns into an Shooter, puzzle, and even racing game from time to time. Look at Zelda which have you fishing and even grave digging for no reason at all.
Bottom-line even "Shovel Knight" and "Blade Kitten" are Platformers. AKA collect the rocks it is so fun. A great example of FAIL is "Vexx" which had some cool looking graphics but barely any exploration worth talking about compared to "Tak".
You should have no reason to use normal Wikipedia when their is a sub wiki that already exist for games. Their are tons of platformer indie games and platformer games in general. That like saying that FPS are dieing. Why is there even a thread about this when this is obviously false to every person that have touched a video game at least once? If we're lacking anything it's on rail shooters and 3D fighters.
