There are quite a few games I've been wanting to play that are only available for GameCube such as Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Double Dash, etc. I can pick up a good used GC for around $20 at my local Disc Replay. The games are pretty expensive though. In your opinion, is it worth having? I just recently purchased a Wii U and love it but have always been partial to the older systems. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you can find some cheap games (try looking for discs only on eBay) or have a buddy that will loan you some, I say go for it. Outside of the three games you mentioned, I can recommend Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime 1&2, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and SSB: Melee.

Bathe in the glory of The Offspring:
Smash
Self-Esteem
Gone Away

Fire Emblem is Nickelback.

Good idea! Yeah, I'm really wanting to try it but don't wanna spend much money on it. Thanks for the suggestions!

Other really solid games: Resident Evil remake, Eternal Darkness, Pikmin 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Viewtiful Joe, etc. The Gamecube is awesome.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

$20? Including the controller? That's a bargain. Don't forget about Animal Crossing, the Viewtiful Joe series, and TLoZ: The Wind Waker; you can get the HD version on the Wii U, but the original is still a timeless masterpiece.

edit: Totally forgot about Pikmin 1 & 2, although in my opinion you're better off with the New Play Control! versions of those games; since those are Wii games, they can be played on your Wii U.

The Gamecube is awesome, so many great games though unfortunately most of them are extremely expensive. Given how much you want to spend depends on whether it'll be worth it, alternatively you could wait until Smash Bros. Wii U is out and hopefully some of the great games will come to Virtual Console.

I would recommend Fire Emblem - path of radiance. Man, it's expensive tho.

Yeah, $20 for GameCube, controller and all the necessary hookups. Okay, I'll def check out some of those games if I decide to get one. I've heard mixed reviews about Luigi's Mansion. Do y'all like that game? It's one of the main reasons I'm wanting to get GameCube.

unrandomsam

Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2
Billy Hatcher and The Giant Egg
F-Zero GX
Kirby's Air Ride
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Super Monkey Ball 2
Viewtiful Joe
Mario Power Tennis (Wii one controls don't work right).
Gauntlet - Dark Legacy (Maybe not as good as the rest but if you are the right age you will like it).
Zelda - Twilight Princess (Best version of).
Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door.
Sonic Adventure 2 - Battle (Beats all other versions that are more buggy).

I never understood why it got mixed reviews, I thought it was great.

It's different from your average Mario game, it isn't a very long game either. The visuals are amazing though. Whilst it isn't my favourite game, I still think it's a must have title for the GameCube.

How does Double Dash rank in comparison to the other Mario Kart games?

Luigi's Mansion is one of my personal favorite games, I think I've played through it like four times!

Also, if you plan on playing with friends, you should definitely try Kirby Air Ride. The City Trial mode is an amazing multiplayer game, it just takes a bit of a learning curve because of how different it is from most other multplayer games.

I like makin' games!
Future Pinball games!
Petit Computer games!!
and SmileBASIC games!
Waiting for Kirby Air Ride 2. One day, it will come. One day...

It's really REALLY different from other mario karts, I played it again the month before MK8 release and at first I had a very hard time. Double characters apart, the whole "feel" of the kart is not as most MK, but that's part of its charm. Those karts are wild beasts to tame, but they are also a great fun to drive once you got the control. Maybe one of the best MK and definitely a unique one.

As extra game since noone mentioned it I gotta suggest also Gotcha Force as title (not sure however if it's cheap-easy to find), best 3d arena fighting game I ever played, there are simply tons of characters ranging between...well... almost any possible wildest dream XP Too bad it got so many mixed reviews that capcom blocked the franchise after a single release >.>;

The GameCube is so awesome, I have two of them. One in the living room, being the one I got for my birthday in 2003. The other one being the Japanese GameCube, which I have added a BIOS switch to play USA or Japan games, which is in my bedroom.

If you plan on importing any Japan GameCube games, I recommend installing the switch: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/game-cube-region-switch/

The one cool thing about the GameCube, is the Game Boy Player add on. This allows you to play most Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance games. I would recommend using the GBA to GC Lead to use a GBA as the controller. One of the reasons to use a GameCube.

As for getting the best picture output, all Japan and USA GameCubes support S-Video. So if your TV supports this, I would definitely get it. Plus the lead is really cheap.
The other best option is to use the component lead, providing your GameCube has the "Digital Output" on the back. The only problem, this cable is REALLY expensive to buy now, so I would only go down this route if you play on your GameCube a lot. It is the best picture quality you can get and some games even support 480p (progressive) output.

As for some game suggestions and more about the GameCube, check out this Game Sack video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnEvlPo-Xh8

As for my recommendations:
USA GameCube:

  • Luigi's Mansion
  • Mario Kart: Double Dash
  • Mario Party 4 (better with four humans)
  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • Zelda: Wind Waker
  • F-ZERO GX
  • Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
  • Eternal Darkness
  • Super Monkey Ball
  • Super Monkey Ball 2
  • Star Fox Assault
  • Beach Spikers
  • Puyo Pop Fever
  • Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
  • Sonic Heroes
  • Donkey Konga 1 & 2 (best with Bongo Controller)
  • Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (best with Bongo Controller)
  • Soul Calibur 2
  • Rayman 3
  • Viewtiful Joe

Japan GameCube:

  • Kururin Squash!
  • Mr. Driller: Drill Land
  • Donkey Konga 1, 2 & 3 (best with Bongo Controller)
