There was an article a while back about the Zelda timeline and basically what it said is that no one really knows what order the games go in. There have been some interesting theories though.
The timeline stuff is really only theorization and doesn't really matter. Only a few games are actually connected, such as Phantom Hourglass taking place after Wind Waker. So don't let it dictate the order you play them in, as you won't find any meaningful connections anyway.

i've read several places recently (including an Aonuma interview in the latest Nintendo Power) that up until Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time is the earliest, chronologically speaking.

I'm pretty sure bro2dagrons is right; Ocarina is the first. I don't remember where Minish Cap stands, but I think Zelda Universe has a pretty accurate timeline theory. http://www.zeldauniverse.net/timeline-theory/
Don't even try do decipher the timeline, just plat whichever you like first. Some can be connected to each other as sequels, but apperently only Nintendo knows how the games fit together chronologically.
Minish Cap was actually made by Flagship, Token, which was funded by Capcom, Sega, and Nintendo. Just learned this recently, myself. Four Swords Adventures ties in with it, loosely, so apparently Nintendo think there's something worthwhile there.
The timeline has always been entirely irrelevant anyway, as it is a huge mess of contradictions. Just play the next game that interests you.
There are several theories that involve Minish Cap as the first (not counting Skyward Sword), but that shouldn't affect the way you play them. I think Twilight Princess or Wind Waker would be a good starting point.

The order you play them in doesn't really matter, so just pick one and play it. My personal favorites are A Link to the Past, Wind Waker, and Majora's Mask.
